My Marty had double FHO surgery. They did the worst side at 10 months old and the other side six weeks later. He had Legg-Calve-Perthes disease. It is a very painful surgery and they will be quite uncomfortable for a while. Supporting them with a folded sheet under their belly to help them walk helps for potty time. Is there a reason why they decided to do both sides instead of splitting it up?
Marty is now 4 and a half years old and runs, jumps, plays and can even stand on his back legs for short periods. I am very glad we had it done although it cost $5K. He was left with crescent shaped scars on both hips.
Take care,
Lisa

Hanky had one side done at around 2 yrs old. It is a major surgery, but effective and small dogs recover well from it. I would NOT do both sides at once. Pick the worst side and let them recover and in 6 mos do the other side. Too hard on the dog to do both at the same time, I think. IMO. Hank is now the fastest, leanest pug in the house and can out run anyone! Highly recommed.

He reason they're doing them both at the same time is because she said since one side isn't worse than the other, we might as well. He's an inbred. We bought him from a pet store - before you say anything, we knew nothing at the time about pet store animals - but both sides are equally bad.

Can you ask them to split it up anyway? What has caused him to need FHO surgery? It is eerie how much he looks like my Marty.

No problem, when we know better, we do better. We all have a learning curve. It is a major surgery and he will not be able to use the leg(s) to walk at all initially. At least Hank didn't, and he favored the leg for close to 6 mos before it was totally healed and the muscle was strong again. You will have to do everything if both legs are done at same time. Carry him everywhere. I set up a Xpen in the livingroom to restrict his movement and initially carried him everywhere and sat him down out side to potty.

I'm sorry to hear this it is very stressful and scary but your pug will be better off afterwards. Oscar had the surgery. In September and then the next for the other leg in November. If they do both legs at once he is gonna have a hard time getting around because it takes about a week to get them to even bear weight. Oscar runs and you would never know he had the surgery. He had calve leggings perthes disease also. When they tell you the medications they are gonna give you ask if any of them can be filled at a regular pharmacy because one of them I only paid 4 dollars for at walmart that I would of paid 40 for at the vet. Feel free to message me. Lisa was the one who made me feel better about oscars surgery cause its scary when you don't know what to expect. Also Oscar was only 8 or 9 months when he had the first surgery.

thanks so much for all of the responses, i really appreciate it everyone.
i need to set my account up through here to email me every time i get a response so i can respond faster than what i have been. so i do apologize for that.
our pug jiggy was purchased at a pet store, had all his papers, you name it. we thought we asked all the right questions, even though we knew nothing about puppy mills or how the pet industry works when it comes to these puppy stores. long story short - he has the leg perthees disease. i am sure i spelled that wrong, haha.
