    Default Weird coughing noise

Hi, a few days ago, Pugsley started making these weird coughing noises that sound like he has phlegms that he's trying to cough up. He always "coughs" maybe three or four times before he makes this bizarre noise like he's trying to hack up a hairball.
It's not a backwards sneeze--he's had those before and this is different.
Also, around the same time he started coughing he started getting really lethargic. For example, he normally wakes me up around seven so I can take him out for a walk, but this morning it was eleven and he was asleep. He always looks like he's about to fall asleep, and has been sleeping more. He also normally tries to pull and tug during walks, and likes to try to play with other dogs, but now he sometimes even walks behind me and is a lot less energetic.
Also, he doesn't like to eat very much of his own food, but for a few days before he started coughing he ate all of his food and then today went back to eating around half of it.
He's almost three years old, and we live in Cancun. There's been a lot of rain storms and humidity lately, could that be affecting him?
I'm taking him to the vet, just in case, but I was just wondering if anyone's dealt with anything like this before.
    Thanks!

He needs to be seen by his vet sooner rather than later, I'd say....It certainly sounds like things aren't right with your boy. Pugs don't handle heat & humidity well at all, but there are a lot of other things to be checked out here, lungs, heart, heartworms? Good luck & please let us know how your vet visit goes--sending along many hugs, positive thoughts & prayers that Pugsley will be fine!

Yeah that doesn't sound normal. Do you have air conditioning in your home? I'd be worried about heat related health issues...

Kennel cough! 'Hock, Hock, GAG' is usually what it sounds like. Does it sound like this?

Especially with lethargy, your pup may be running a fever. Definitely see a vet ASAP!

He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, till the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.

Yes, that's exactly what it sounds like! I took him to the vet today and they gave him an antibiotic and some cough syrup. The vet mentioned it might be kennel cough, but they also took a blood sample to check for heart worms and he's going to call with the results. We have another appointment in a week, and hopefully by then he's better.

    Thanks everybody!
