I too lost my baby girl Lola in may 2006. She was only 8 months old. I was actually looking for info on the internet when I found this site. PDE is awful and everone should be aware of the symptoms. Thank you for your post, Emmy

To all of you who replied to my message I wrote yesterday about Lola...Thank you. I always read these forums but never join. I had no idea how much support there is out there.
Lola started having her second seizure of the day while I was typing her story yesterday. I had just given her phenobarb not even 2 mins before she had the seizure. It was atleast 35 seconds. Foam from her mouth.I ran with her in my arms to my car and took her straight to the animal hospital. Where she later had another. The vet knew it was bad. Her medication had been increased to 3 pills a day instead of 2. And she only continued to get worse. She had lots of twiching. the nuerologist she saw last friday spoke with her vet and concluded that he felt it was PDE. We had the option to drag it out and take her home to see if she would get better. It really was the toughest decision my husband and I have made in our entire lives. She was so tired. All she could do was lay down. I had not seen my true Lola in a week and a half. She was nowhere in sight. My husband stayed in the room when they put her to sleep. I tried my hardest to stay with her but left the room as soon as I saw the needle. I knew I could not bear to see her take her last breath. We are thankful to have each other during this tough time. Please ask us any questions about Lola, her symptoms, or what ever else you may want to know. Oh and YES I think the vaccines brought this on. I feel that she was a carrier of PDE and it was only a matter of time before this happened. We will continue to be a part of this site as you all can probably relate we are not done with pugs. She was our first. We learned so much from her. She taught us so much and we look forward to welcomming another pug into our hearts. The following is what we sent our to our friends and family via email:
To some of you this may be a surprise and to some of you, you know that the past week and a half has been one of the most challenging in both of our lives. Lola is finally at peace now. She has been suffering from seizures 2-4 a day for the past week. We thought maybe she just had a severe case of epilespy. But with no response to treatment and her seizures got worse we had to finally let go and accept that we have lost her to Pug Encephalitis. We never thought we could love something so much. She was like a child to us. For those of you who are dog lovers you know what we mean. We let her into our hearts and loved her with all we had. Her short life with us was full of fun and adventures. The love she showed us we could have is priceless and we would do it again in a heartbeat. So to anyone we may have ignored this week...we are very sorry. We just needed some time with her to put the situation into perspective. Love , Emmy & Scuba

I am crying my eyes out reading this forum. It scares the hell out of me that after all these years of wanting a dog and waiting for the right time that she could be taken from me like that. I have been very lucky in my life that my son who is now 19 has had almost perfect health so far in his life. Our cats are mixed and have been healthy so far also. Our animals really depend on us since they cannot speak for themselves. I am intersted in helping with this new forum and will be checking it out very soon. I am so sorry for those who loved and lost their precious pugs PDE. Holly and I want you to know our hearts go out to you and yours.

i am so sorry and sad to hear this tragic story. i will pray for you and have courage.
I'm so deeply sorry for your loss. It's just so tragic. Every now and then Dolly Lllama has a seizure , she comes out of it ok and seems fine afterward. She's 15 and it's been happening on and off for 4 years. The Vet can't find a thing wrong with her? It seems very mysterious to me, and very scary. Again, I am so sorry about your baby.
Thanks so much for posting this and making other pug owners aware of PDE. It has to be the most horrible, dibilitating disease. My baby Maggie, was 3 1/2, passed away in May with this most horrible disease. I beg everyone to be in touch with your babies. My heart and prayers are with everyone who has lost a pug to this disease and to anyone who is suffering through it now.
Thank you to this website because when my Maggie was first diagnosed, this is the only place that I did find solace.....
Bosley has PDE; he was diagnosed 2 years ago. We have consulted Kim Greer (A&M) about him; when his passes she will personally pick him up at my house. She will have him cremated and returned to me.
Bosley is the most wonderful boy. We are fortunate to have him and wouldn't trade him for a million dollars. Do I wish he didn't have the problems - of course. But because of his problems he is the pug we love. I know he is 3 years old now; but his liver and kidney functions are great. His body can process all the medication he is on - which I truly believe is why he is still with us. We are truly blessed he was surrendered to DFW Pug Rescue and we are honored to have been given him to take care of for his remaining years.
Kim Greer says the longest living pug with PDE (that she knows of) is 18 months (after diagnoses). Bosley has that beat, he has every symptom except Depression. He is a happy boy who is a little on the FAT side but we let him have the run of the house (peeing and all). He can no longer sleep on the bed because when he has a seizure he falls off the bed.
PDE is terrible - but we are proof that if you get really lucky - you can battle it.
