Every pug owner in the world needs to be aware of a mysterious seizuring disorder that can strike Chinese pugs exclusively, usually between the ages of 9 months to 4 years...a tragic, fatal killer known as Pug Dog Encephalitis, that strikes with little, if any, warning. A pug can seem perfectly healthy one day and all but be at death's door the next day and for all the research that has so far been done, little definitive information has been recognized. There are two forms of PDE - one progresses rapidly, the other somewhat slower...but the outcome is the same.
Please, I encourage everyone to check out pugvillageofhope.info - Home and contact
Rebecca / ewoodpugz
Sue / Old Mother Hubbard
or
Rona / Fourteen Legs
if you can volunteer to help in any manner.
www.pugvillageofhope.info is beautifully designed and has the potential to be a website where pug owners can share experiences, seek information, and pool their resources toward helping solve a tragic problem that appears to be growing at an alarming rate.

Those we have held in our arms for a little while,we hold in our hearts forever.
Thank you Ann, for bringing our attention to the serious side. We
have a lot of fun talking back and forth, but there are very important
things we need to have our minds on too. Things that can take our
precious little ones away from us. We all think, it won't happen to my
baby, but it can. We all need to offer to help in any way we can.
My offer is here, let me know of anything I can do to be of service
to this site. It made me sad that no one had replied to this plea for
help. Wendy, Otis, and China
Ann, thank you so much for the post. After losing Ava to this horrible killer, I have been waiting anxiously for this site to be up and running. I would LOVE to help out with the site in any way, shape, or form. I should also add that my husband is a web developer and graphic designer. You have both of our help, should you wish.
Sincerely,
Melanie
Ann,
Thank you for the post. I would have never of known.Thank you.
PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE SIGNS.
Read the website and know the symptoms.
All of this past week my baby girl Olivia -a six month old fawn female- had been extra lazy. She spent the days sunbathing in front of the screendoor for hours. We didn't take it as a sign of anything wrong because we always knew she loved to just relax, and plus every once in a while she would go pick up her raw hide and chew on it, or come over to me and give me a couple of kisses. She hadn't had much of an appetite either, but we were sure it was because we had just brought home a new baby pug, so maybe she was just stressed out over the new addition to the family.
On Friday night before we went to bed, everything seemed fine. We put her in "her room" (that's what we call her crate) and went to sleep.
When we woke up on Saturday morning to let her out to go potty, she was having a severe seizure. Her eyes were glazed over and she wasn't responding to us or coming out of the seizure. We rushed her to the emergency room.
The vet performed a variety of tests and decided that Olivia did not have liver shunts or GME.
Yesterday-- Several tests and a million tears later.. the vet told us she concluded that baby Olivia had PDE.
Olivia had been in a constant state of convulsion for over 24 hours, despite the use of valium.
We had to put her to sleep this morning.
I've never lost anyone close to me before. My pugs are like my children. I love Olivia so much ..and the rapid onset of this illness gave us no time to prepare for the tragic effects.
The loss of our baby Olivia has put a huge hole in our hearts and lives. She was only 6 months old. She barely had time to enjoy the warm weather, or play with her new pug sister.
I wish so desperately that everyone becomes aware of the signs and symptoms so that they never have to wake up to find their baby pug in the state in which I found mine.
It is painful, and you would like to think it would never happen to you... but it can.
PLEASE READ UP ON PDE AND KNOW YOUR DOG.. DON'T TAKE ANY LITTLE SIGN LIGHTLY!!!!
If anyone else is grieving over the loss of their pug for any reason, please contact me and I will keep your baby in my prayers!
My email address is [email protected].
Thank you and I hope that soon we can find out more about this deadly disorder and one day find a cure.

My heart breaks for you and the loss of your little one. While we are dealing with a scare of our own with Astrid. We begin to hope she will be fine. Though not out of the woods we think we see the treeline. Still I believe this info needs to be pushed into the collective awareness of pug lovers. I have had many remarkable animals of various breeds touch my life and have had the heartbreak of loss. Yet nothing in my fairly broad exp terrified me the way I was when PDE was a very real threat to my baby girl. It is a horrible thing to face. That such a cruel disease should target, attack and ravage only Pugs. Makes it all the more important to raise awareness. Since it is not spread accross many breeds the research will obviously be less pressing to the masses. If you have a Pug or just love a Pug. This is your concern even if you are blessed to never have to face it.
