Lately Henry has been scooting and acting like his bottom is uncomfortable, and he leaked some anal gland fluid on my lap the other day. So yesterday I decided to use the technique my vet showed me to express his glands from the outside. I did this, and bathed him. (Same for Rudy.) Some fluid came out (very dark brown and bad smelling) but not a lot. He acted like the process of expressing was uncomfortable, he whined a little. But he seemed fine after that, and he enjoyed his bath.
This morning he ran outside and first thing he did when he hit the grass was to poop. Usually it takes while for him to get to that. We came back inside, and I let him on my lap, and immediately noticed a smear across my shirt. I showed Jeff & he said it looks like blood. We looked at Henry's rear and there was a little blood coming out. Then a tiny chunk of something came out, and some light brown fluid. A little later a little more blood and some more light brown fluid came out. It isn't a constant flow, but it has happened 2 times this morning.
I wonder if I hurt him somehow when I expressed his glands last night? I feel terrible, I was just trying to help him.![]()
A vet here in town opens up in a couple of hours so we are going to see if we can take him in then. Other then the intermittent slight bleeding and light brown fluid coming out, he is acting normal. Regular appetite and energy levels, and he doesn't appear to be in pain. But he *has* been extremly flatulent this morning though, much more so then usual.
I will post an update either later today or tomorrow evening when I get a chance. I hope everything is ok with Henry.![]()
(It's not been a good morning for the pets. After discovering Henry's problem, I found that Jeff accidentally locked one of our cats in the bathroom all night, and she peed all over the rug. Poor Kitty!)

I don't think you hurt him. Diahrea can cause bleeding, and the light brown fluid could be that. Although once Louisie's anal gland was blocked and it bled when it opened up. I hope he doesn't have a blockage, that is what worries, me, but if he is playing OK, that doesn't sound like the case either.

If you expressed the glands externally, I don't see how you could have hurt him, so put your conscience to rest. The question I have is whether he might have a little pocket of infection in one of his glands - regardless of the cause, you're going to have the vet have a look, which will, hopefully, provide the answer. He might have had some discomfort if there is an infection and the vet will be able to tell what's going on. But you didn't do anything to cause this.

Maryjo & Viralmd--Thank you for putting my mind to ease a little. Knowing it wasn't my actions helps. Finding out from the vet what is wrong will of course help further.
Jeff went back outside and examined Henry's morning poop. It's a huge pile, at least 3 times the normal amount he usually goes. Then just a minute ago Henry tried to go poo some more, had some diarrhea, and a little more blood and brown stuff came out.

It does sound like there might be a bit of an infection, or possibly just some gastrointestinal distress. Poor little guy.Let us know how the vet visit goes. In the meantime, you might want to cook him up some poached chicken and mushy rice for dinner.

You have received great advice, and I think the vet can ease your mind. I just wanted to say how much I love PV - where else can you spend a Sunday morning discussing these things and get a bunch of concerned, interested answers? Anywhere else, you would be asked to leave and NOT COME BACK! Peg
Thanks everyone!
We talked to the vet, they said before we bring Henry in to just keep an eye on him for a while, and see how things go.
So far Henry seems to be doing better. No more bleeding since yesterday morning. Appetite and energy levels still normal.![]()

I'm glad everything is looking good---but consider this. There is no other group of people in the world who would monitor poop, other than pug owners. And I will forever cherish the calm observation that your husband was sent out to check pug poop, which was approximately three times its normal volume.
That is so true. We are quite the bunch here aren't we?Originally Posted by tall grass pugs
