    Default Reverse Sneezing Question

How long does a reverse sneeze last?

Ever since Lola caught kennel cough she has been reverse sneezing more frequently. It would happen once in awhile but now it's every day. It is making me nervous because it is lasting a very long time and it seems like it is so hard for her to breathe.

Hoover used to go through periods where it seemed like he was doing it every day and it seemed to last forever but probably was only about 5 min (which I guess is a long time!) He'd stop for a minute then it would start again. Then he'd go for months and not do it at all. I don't know if it was the weather or what. I actually have only heard both Nell and Lucy do it once. Have you tried prying her mouth open to force her to take a breath? It worked with Lucy but Nell won't let me get near her to do it.

Kerry, it's likely that there's still some residual inflammation (and therefore swelling) along Lola's respiratory tree, so she's going to have issues for a while. Just keep her calm and they'll pass, and will likely diminish, but it's going to take some time.

Amanda...I thought about prying her mouth open but I didn't know if that was ok to do. It goes on for a few LONG minutes. I am glad to hear this is not abnormal.

When I picked her up it just made it worse so I let her be. We did say "want a treat" and got her one and that seemed to work and snap her out of it.

ViralMd...that's good to know this is related to her kennel cough. I can't wait for this to be over and done with!

Her cough is so much better. I have been giving her antibiotic spread over a tablespoon of pumpkin and she is really gobbling it up! She thinks it's a treat. I think after all this she will be getting a little pumpking daily

Murphy's been doing a lot of reverse sneezing. I just let him go through it and comfort him. He looks so pitiful when it does it. I feel so bad for my Murph-Man!

Rollo has done it for up to 1 minute before, it is very scary and it does seem like it is so hard for him to breath. I hope that Lola and Murphy are both feeling better now.

That's actually how we noticed something was wrong with Lemon. Before she ever started coughing, she was reverse sneezing for WAY longer than normal. Even though I know what it is, it still scares me every time... mostly because *she* looks so scared while it's happening.

Frodo always does it when he gets excited. If i don't help him to stop it'll be a few minutes.
Usually i just pinch his nose shut for a sec until he opens his mouth to breathe and he done with it.

Sergei does it with the change of seasons, It is scary for the little guy though, he hasnt done it in a while though. My vet said it was okay as long as it didnt go on for like more than a few minutes or so.

If you try to keep them calm they seem to get through it faster. Usually we just pet them and tell them "its ok" I think they scare themselves.
