    Default Entropion

Hi everyone.. I took my Pug, Mason to the vet earlier today because I thought he had a mild infection in both his eyes..

They checked his eyes and it seems he has some scratching caused from his eye lashes.. My vet suggested surgery to correct it. He said it will get worse and cause infections..

Has anyone had this procedure done? If so, was it tramatic? I was just hoping to get some opinions from other Pug owners.. My vet told me this was rather common in the Pug breed?

    Thanks..

Hi, both my pugs have Entropion eyelids.

Stella had to have surgery to remove saccules in her larynx so we had her eyelids done at the same time. I get nervous at any sugery but Stella came out fine, and we had to keep an e-collar on her for a week, and apply an ointment to her eye twice a day. She would try to scratch at her eyes (probably itchy) if we took the e-collar off, and after a few weeks the stitches dissolved on their own. Her eyes are great now but the vet still advises us to put lubricating eye gel in her eyes a few times a week.

Winston hasn't had the surgery done since the vet doesn't think it is bad enough yet to risk putting him under. Winston and Stella see the eye vet every six months to be evaluated.

According to Cyril's ophthalmologist (yes, he has an ophthalmologist), entropion is almost universal in pugs because of the shape of the skull. And if eyelashes aren't causing problems, then hairs from the nose roll are. And yes, it's a very simple procedure, although it does require general anaesthesia and is usually very successful. I would agree that continuing the lubricant is a wise precaution, even after the problem is surgically corrected.

Henry had very similar surgery about a month ago although his surgery was because his eyes couldn't close, not entropion. Prior to the surgery his eyes would dry out when he was asleep and he has quite a bit of PK in both eyes and also was developing an ulcer at least once a month.
He is still on Optimmune and also a lubricating gel but he can now close his eyes all the way. His e-collar was on for about 3 weeks and his stitches are still dissolving but he's now all healed up and back to his normal puggy self.
The surgery is expensive but, if it will save Mason's sight, well worth it. As for being traumatic - I think I suffered more than Henry
    Good luck.

Daisy had problems with both of these and had surgery earlier this year. It was of course the anestesia that I was most worried about but she came through just fine. She wore a cone for a couple of weeks and needed ointment.... you can still see the little scars in the corners of her eyes where they reduced the nose rolls but she's still gorgeous.
