I use both the Nova Pearls and Buddy Wash - I like them both so I switch back and forth. Also their coats are wonderful with the Wellness food.

Sheri, the light foods don't have as much fat, so that might be affecting his coat. You might want to try one of the fatty acid capsules. You can find a few brands at Petsmart, I'm sure. They'll affect his coat from the inside out -- shampoo only affects it for a few days.

Right now my ultimate favorites are the shampoos from Royal Treatment pet products. They had a booth at the grooming seminar I went to in September, which is how I discovered them. I LOVE the Honey-Dipped Banana & Oatmeal shampoo!!!! The Pugs smell good enough to eat right up, and are so shiny when I use it. I also have their French Vanilla Milk shampoo. I follow the shampoo with their Ocean Mist spritz. They make other types like Honey-Drizzled Lemon, Pumpkin Patch & Nutmeg, Fresh Currant, Green Tea & Mint, and a few more. They are all soap-free and tearless. http://www.getroyaltreatment.com/grooming.htm
Their retail prices are pretty atrocious, but I got to pay the wholesale price because I am a groomer. They also sell some of the products on HSN.com for much better prices.
Buddy Wash had to grow on me - at first, the scent reminded me of my grandmother's powder. I like bit better now, and the Buddy Splash makes them so soft. Others I like are Tropiclean (you can get that at Petsmart or Petco) and Espree (thatpetplace.com).
You usually can find it at a pet food store that sells holistic & natural foods.Originally Posted by PugStop
As far as the science diet light - Main ingredients include corn meal, cracked wheat, soybean mill run 16.5% (a source of fiber), and chicken by-product meal.
Light foods are generally horrid, particularly for weight loss. They generally are high in carbs and dogs lack enzymes to properly break them down and digest them so they turn into excess cals. You end up feeding less and less, and the dog is sooooo hungry, coat & skin become dry and brittle. In addition to allergies. Corn, wheat & soy are some of the allergens routinely tested in dogs because of the likely hood of allergies to them.

The Nutritional Differences Between Dogs and Humans

" Dogs can't handle as much cereal as humans. One reason
is that humans and dogs differ in the amount of enzymes they
make that are needed to break down carbohydrates. Dogs
have about 80% less enzymes to break down carbohydrates
than people do."
I have had my dogs allergy tested, and I do not feed them commercial foods. I found it is far less expensive & my dogs gleam and shine! Dogs survived for thousands of years prior to commercial food being introduced. Yes, it is convienant. But setting aside an hour a month I can make & freeze food for the month. My dogs are happy, healthy, my seniors are spry! The best part is that Miss Phoebe Isabella has almost no shedding. You can scratch her, run your hand down her back & barely get a hair off the pug! Her nose is soft, wet & not dry or cracked. Pawpads are supple. And she is an awesome weight. I don't feed any grains at all. After studying the carnovore diet I found that grains = weight gain, and excess stool output.
I use anything that I like the smells good. Sometimes its more about nutrition. Healthy variety food might help
