When I was in PetSmart I started talking to a lady & she told me never to use dog shampoo. She claims that a good plain water rinse will clean a dog & not cause excess oil on their skin--which she says causes the doggie smell. Anyone do this & does this seem like it could be right?
Did she say what kind of dog she had? Just wondering...not sure that it would have anything to do with it. Did she happen to have her dog with her...if so, did it look and smell clean?
I wouldn't think it could possibly work...if it did, where in the world would the old saying come from about smelling like a "wet dog"?
I think I'm gonna stick with my baby shampoo on my two.
She said she had an American Bulldog & he wasn't there. She says the shampoo strips the oils & then the skin makes up for it & it's the oils that causes dogs to smell.
Human shampoo is not good for dogs. It's the completely wrong pH and upsets the acid/base balance of the superficial skin.
I've never heard what this woman is saying. It doesn't make chemical sense, as the shampoo has components to REMOVE oils. I always use dog shampoo on Cyril and it's never been a problem.

That sounds like an old-school thought to me. Shampoos way back when were much more harsh. These days, you'll find lots of dog shampoos that are very gentle.
If I didn't use shampoo on my hair, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be very clean!
