    Default too early for grooming?

I know I have many questions and I love you all for being so helpful and patient with me ::hugs::...I was just wondering if it is too early for my puppy (almost 5mths) to get his nails clipped, ears cleaned, and groomed?..petsmart is offering a promo and I just want to know on average how often do they need their nails clipped? I know the bathing part won't hurt him..and the ears cleaned is it best to go to a vet?? thanks everyone

I would say if he is good on all shots I see no problem with it. And the groomers can clean his ears, and you should clean his ears too, you don't need to be a vet to clean a dogs ears. I trimmed my dogs nails starting at 8 weeks old.

I start doing puppies nails at a week to 10 days old and every week after that!!! Once they're a bit older...goes to everyother week.

Your pup should have all its shots...right??????

I just do all that stuff at home. Except Bentley, but he's a bit of a nutjob (sorry Bentley).. the vet has to help me with him when it comes to nails. Otherwise, I prefer to be the one... I'm not much for strangers messing with my pugs. I guess I have trust issues. LOL

I also do it all at home. I cant see spending all that money for something I can do my self with less stress on the dogs. Buck doesn't like strangers so he would freak out at a groomers. And the cost of it why pay all that money for something you can do? I dremel all my guys nails, they get use to it they don't love it but they arent that bad either. Ears everyone should know how to do at home, your pugs ears will probably needs to be cleaned more often then you take him to the groomers (at least my guys ears do) I also do the anal glands my self, my vet charges $10 for anal glands for me that's $30 no way Ill do it at home its really not that bad. My guys all love bath well except for Gabby who doesn't love it but but will tolerate it, We put Buck and Jill in the tub all the time in the winter so they can play and splash around in the water.

It's certainly not too early to get all those things done and get your Pug used to them, but I prefer to do it myself, especially now while she is young. When you take them to PetSmart or wherever they like you to leave them there for 4-5 hours. I can do Co-Pilot from start to finish (bath, ears, nails, blowdry, brush, clean face and folds) in about an hour. I don't see putting her through strangers and the other 4 hours in a small crate there...that's just me. If you want help on how to groom yourself, just ask! it gets easier the more you do it.

I rescued Penny when she was 3. I tried to brush her; she squirmed away. I tried to brush her teeth; she liked the toothpaste on my finger but would not tolerate the brush. I take her to a local shop to be groomed, but she gets so nervous and upset when she is there that she poops on the floor. Should I try again or find another groomer?

I also tried taking my boys out to a groomer.
Bubba hated going. Plus they basically had to be there all day, in a cage!
We now have a mobile groomer who comes right up our driveway.
Within one hour they both are completely groomed!

It's NEVER too early to start grooming - especially getting the nails dremeled or clipped. Why not do it yourself? Have the vet show you how to do the nails (or look at http://homepages.udayton.edu/~merens...el/dremel.html) and do everything yourself. After all, ears should be cleaned weekly, the teeth AT LEAST once weekly, preferably more often, so why make a trip to the groomer with all the potential for spread of disease and expense, when you can do it yourself?

The sooner you can clean those ears and dremel those nails, the better! Even if grooming costs were minimal, I would rather take care of them myself. It's in the comfort of their own home & they get a nice treat afterwards. The longer you wait, the more difficult it can become.

A dremel minimite is only around $20.00. Two nail trimmings at the groomers & I've paid for it. With vet visits costing what they do, every little bit helps.
