Kobe, my sweet apricot boy, now 9 years old, has always preferred to be alone. He was never a big cuddler with the other dogs, the submissive at the bottom of the pack and victim of humping...But he is such a sweet and good dog and LOVES his people.
I have a senior lady, Karen who works for me. She and her husband Ben have been having a lot of health problems. She had a pulmonary embolism and he has severe diabetes. They had a young cocker mix dog, but had to re-home her when they could no longer take her on walks or give her the stimulation and attention she needed.
They miss havng a dog terribly, but felt with their health in such a bad state, they could not commit to even an older, calm dog.
Then she asked if they could "borrow" Kobe as a therapy dog. It was the perfect situation for him! Kobe is now an only dog, adored and spoiled, Ben has someone to lay next to him in the recliner, who is good with a walk when Ben is good with a walk, but is just as happy to lay next to him in the recliner or bed. He's already potty-trained and past all the chewing and digging of a young dog.
When they feel they cannot take care of him anymore, he will come back. and he still comes here when no one will be home or they vacation. He also comes here for his toenail trimming and teeth cleaning appointments. If he ever needs major vet care, I will pay for it and I give them his food.
He is so happy and they are too. It's such a beautiful arrangement....I wish we could place more of our senior dogs with seniors in a similar arrangement. It's something rescues might want to consider doing for both the senior citizens in their communities and in their rescue seems a win-win for both and the dogs still have the safety net of the rescue if their senior people reach a point they can no longer care for them.
Here is a picture of Kobe and Ben enjoying morning coffee together. Please excuse the bare chest!
Take care,
Lisa
