    Default Advice

Im posting this on my Fiance Amber's account. She has had yet ANOTHER tragedy happen to her this past weekend. She was dispatching, and recieved a 911 call that one of her long-time friends (they've been friends since High School) had drowned in a local river. Being the dispatcher, she had to keep her composure as much as she could, and do her job, (which I must add she is DAMN good at!) Now she has re-treated into her own little world, and cuddles all the time with the animals. They are her comfort and outlet.

I recieved a call tonight, approximately 30 minutes ago, from a breeder whom I'll call G, whom Ive been speaking with for quite some time, but it's not for a Pug. It's for a Hairless Chinease Crested. Amber has ADORED this breed for as long as Ive known her, and fell in love with this female that G has had for 6 years. G calls me, and says this is the last litter that this Momma is having, she is due any minute, and that Amber can have pick of litter. I have already paid for this puppy. It was going to be our anniversary present.

My question is, are the pugs going to be ok with a different breed of dog? They are good with the kids, and with the cats, but I just want to make sure everyone is going to get along. Any advice?

    Sincerly

Sean, I have no advice for you - I have no knowledge of cresteds. Our pug gets along well with our pug cross, and all of the local dogs, but I'm sure it's up to the individual dog. I will keep Amber in my thoughts and prayers. That's a phenomenally tough job at the best of times, and I can't even imagine having to be composed at a heartbreaking time. I am glad the dogs give her support, but you be her guardian - if she does not start to heal and come back out of her shell in a few days, please get her some professional help!!!! There are lots of psychologists that deal with professional burnout and similar issues.

As Heather stated I do not know or own the crested breed. But Pugs in general are great dogs that get along with any other friendly dog. And mine have played with a few at our dog parks and get along fine.

It depends on the individual dog. And usually well bred puppies that are raised in your home will grown up in your lifestyle, puppies are not born with aggression it is developed. Are your Pugs hyper active and happy go lucky? Or mellow couch potatoes? You may want to get a puppy to match THEIR personality. If they are mellow and you get a hyper puppy it may just irritate them into disliking the puppy. Also if they are hyperactive and you get a more timid puppy they may want to dominate the puppy and never create a strong bond with it.

Have you met the parents? Maybe take your Pugs to meet the daddy and make sure they get along as mother dogs become very protective aggressive toward other dogs near their puppies. Which is very normal. But in general dogs do not make a good gift. Although cute and I'm sure she'd be thrilled, if it's going to be mostly her dog. I'd suggest tell her "happy anniversary we're going to choose your new puppy." And let her choose the puppy she wants. Remember a dog is for life.

And I cannot imagine what she is going through. I'll keep you and her in my prayers. As Heather stated if she cannot gather herself you may want to look into looking for a physiologist to help her through it.

Just wanted to say that I hope Amber is feeling better soon. She has to grieve in what ever way suits her, but hopefully her pain will lessen as time goes by. I am fascinated by the hairless dogs. I'm sure you've already been informed of the special skin precautions that must be taken with these dogs, but since you already know about sun precautions with pugs, it shouldn't change the routine much. Depending on your pugs age and activity level, the puppy may cause some aggravation BUT may be accepted as a new and fun "toy". Monitor them closely when they are together and provide a safe "place" for each to be away from the other when needed. Congratulations on you new puppy. I'm eager to see pictures.

I have no advice but just wanted to say I am so sorry about Amber's friend and how wonderful it is she has such a caring fiancé. I hope cuddling with the pugs gives her some of the comfort she needs!

I would only recommend what I've read on this website from time to time that it usually works best if you get a dog of the opposite sex. So sorry to hear about the tragedy. Give her our love and let her know many of us here at PV will have her in our thoughts and prayers. Please keep us posted.

I have no advice regarding the Crested, I think it depends so much on the individual pugs.... but I just wanted to send a hug for Amber and tell her how sorry I am to hear of her friend.

Sorry, I also don't know anything about that breed, but my two get along just fine with other small dogs. I don't know how old your pug is or how he/ she is with other animals but I would say if they are good then it should be OK with some training and patience.
I hope your fiancé is OK.

I can't give advice on dogs; Paddy is my first (and only, so far) dog, but I'll hold Amber and her friend in the light.
