Thumbs up We really want a Pug, but...

    Hi Everyone,

I just registered on Pug Village a little while ago. Me and my family REALLY wants a Pug! However, we have a bit of a problem that we need a solution to before we adopt one:

We have a cottage about an hour away. The real issue is, we are located on a lot with 11 other cottages, and there is a "No Dog" rule. Now let's say we get lucky and they let us bring the Pug to the cottage. We go on our boat for usually at least a couple hours every day. If we got a dog car seat and strapped the Pug in, would it be able to manage being on a boat?

Now let's say we don't get lucky, and they don't let us bring the Pug. It is ok and humane to leave a 6 month old Pug with a Pug sitter or boarded up every weekend for 3 months?

We REALLY want a Pug but we don't want to give up our cottage. What do you guys think?

I'd skip the pug for now......sounds like the cottage is more of a priority

My suggestion would be to see if you can get the rules changed at your cottage......or to look for another cottage that allows dogs before getting any dog!

I have to agree too. when we had small kids if kids were not allowed at some cottages that we would have rented..we did not go. the same with the pug at the time..if the pug was not allowed...we did not go their either.
lots of cottages out there that allow pugs..or other smaller dogs ..
the big thing is to make sure you clean up after your dog, keep them on a leash and so on..

sounds like your cottage and boat are your top priority...
here my dogs rule my decision on lots of things
they are part of my family all the time......and everywhere too

the boat the pug can handle.....we used to take our pug out on the boat for a bit too.......but in the summer heat that can be an issue. 2 hours in the water with the sun beating down might not be a good idea for a pug. we only took our out for a short while and only when the sun was just coming up or when the sun was just about going down in the boat

If you get a Pug, you won't want to leave him or her alone that often. There is one trip a year we can't take our boys on, and while I love vacation, I hate leaving them behind. If the cottage is in an area where the temperatures get reasonably warm, you'll want to make sure you have AC; a Pug won't be very comfortable if it gets too hot inside.

If the Pug is coming on the boat, make sure there's a shady area with a constantly filled water bowl. And invest in a life jacket, just in case. Many Pugs can't swim. I don't know how much fun it would be for the Pug to be confined while on a boat. I'll defer to others on whether their Pugs like boats; we've never tried it.

It's not my place to tell you what should be important...but if you get a Pug, make sure you're able to be as devoted to the Pug as it will be to you.

If the cabin is cool, the pug can stay in the cabin for two hours while you are out boating.

We take Tinker on our boat all the time but it has a cabin she can get into if too hot. They really don't tolerate heat well and can die quickly if overheated. We make sure it's not too hot that day, she has water and we have wet her down.
On your other issue about the cabin, I personally would not leave a young dog with a sitter every weekend. If you can't get the rules changed you might want to wait. If you do get the rules changed you need AC if it gets really hot where the cabin is located.Sounds like you have alot of decisions to make. Good luck.

Thank you. Would it not be fair to the Pug to leave it in the cottage (with the A/C and fan, of course) while we were on the boat for an hour or two?

That's definitely a good option! An hour or two is no big deal. If you were boating for 6 hrs out of the day, that's a different story. But a cabin, with AC, is perfect for a pug nap.

Thanks so much, everyone! I really didn't expect to get so many replies so soon. You information is extremely helpful, and I will try my best to get the rules changed, so both us and the Pug will be happy. I'm thinking about sending an email to everyone on our lot. Any ideas on what to say???

Thanks again. Have a great weekend!
