This afternoon, after realizing I had missed my normal time for taking my seizure medication (partial onset epilepsy), I grabbed my two pills & attempted to cross the baby gate into the kitchen where Cash was being "detained" due to my maintenance guy coming over. As I stepped over the gate, my small 25mg pill flew out of my hand & disappeared. We all know how pugs are (especially young ones) about quickly devouring anything that isn't nailed to the floor the minute they find it & you guessed it, he quickly went nose to the floor. I watched it fall & assumed it had done so on the other side of the room where he was NOT but it seems everything quickly disappears once it leaves your hands & travels to another undetectable third dimension. Even though I swore it fell away from him, a few minutes after looking I noticed him put his mouth on something as if he ate it. A few seconds went by where I told myself there was no way that he ate it but I quickly realized that that pill was no where to be found. I stood up for a second & realized I needed to call the vets, so that's what I did. After being on hold (and promptly reading about how toxic Lamotragine can be in dogs, especially small ones) I was connected & prompted to come in right away.
After dropping him off & learning that the hoover vacuum cleaner I call a dog would have to stay til this evening, I returned to the house hoping to continue searching for the pill. My maintenance guy lovingly helped me search but after about half an hour, I really came to terms with the fact that it just wasn't there. Luckily he was in the hands of a vet & was getting rid of the pill through induced vomiting, but it's still too much to comprehend. But still, I'm sure he's doing fine & things will be okay.
On the upside, I ended up cleaning my entire kitchen in ways it had never been cleaned before. But what have I learned? Never stand over a pug when you have something in your hand that could be dropped at any moment, despite how harmless it may seem. They will eat anything they come in contact with.
I'll keep everyone updated. For now, I just needed to get that story out.
I am glad he's at the vet and they are treaTING HIM.
iN THE FUTURE, KNOW THAT HOUSEHOLD PEROXIDE, GIVEN BY THE SYRINGEFUL (Sorry caps lock) will induce vomiting. Give it immediately after something like that before they have a chance to absorb the pill. Just continue to give syringefull after syringefull until he pukes, usually takes 3-4 large syringes. Put them in a confined area with a bare floor to make sure they vomit it up. if they throw up the whole pill right away you won't have to take them to the vet unless they begin to act strangely.

PS - in all of that chaos did you remember to take your pill?

I take lots of pills at night and I've always feared this happening. I try to be very careful. So glad you got him to the vet. Hope all is well.

My sister's parrot ate her dropped thyroid meds once... even after pumping his stomach and giving charcoal he acted like he'd had ten espressos for a few days.
My friend lost a watch battery and thought her lab ate it, so gave peroxide, and put the dog out. Then they found the battery, and hubby felt sorry for the dog and let her back in the house .... then the peroxide worked. Moral: Never let the dog in after peroxide till it pukes!!
I hope Cash recovers well... but don't count on him learning any lessons! Guard those pills!!

Accidents happen. I've scrambled more than once to beat the Pugs to a dropped pill. Your account was funny as long as Cash is okay. Please update us when you can.

He's home, fine, acting like nothing happened except being a little sleepy. 6 Beautiful Pugs, I had to try peroxide in the past with him after he ate...something else, i don't remember, but it didn't work with him. He never threw it up! I also used to work at the vet hospital I took him too, so I knew the docs & had help with the bill, so I felt it was worth it to do that. I also wanted him to have the charcoal as well, even though for him that's horrible to go through. And yes, I did remember to take the other pill but it was a little late through all the chaos!! It's hard enough sometimes just to stay on a normal routine.
Wally n Leto, what a story with your sisters parrot! It's so hard to begin with to have to take so many medications on a daily basis to treat my epilepsy, but the added stress like this never make it easier! Any other day, I'm usually really careful but of course he had to be at my feet the one day I drop something! I know he wont learn a darn thing, he'd eat it all over again I'm sure.
As I said, all is well & he's resting happily. It's been one hell of a day!!
Great news that he is home and okay.

So glad to hear he is home and doing fine now. Pugs love to eat anything that's on the floor!!!
