Default Rescue and Rehoming on Thalia's Schedule

She was an old dog when released from captivity, a zinc cage airborne in an unheated barn. Commercial breeding is everything you can imagine. Worn out, ugly, trembling and half blind from a lifetime spent in the dark, she was taken to a breeder's auction in Arkansas, where she was purchased by a disguised rescuer. Rescue isn't welcome at auctions, and people have been hurt when identified by commercial breeders who always try to get one more profitable litter out of a worn out bitch. Thalia drifted unplaceable, bitter and shaking for weeks, then months, then made it to DFW where her caretaker and her husband stood behind curtains in the front room before Thalia would come in from the yard. A runner from the Great Pyrenees folks brought her north from Texas on a burning hot day, transported in the back of a college kid sedan with a boom box. Thalia didn't want anything from anyone, not even the ritual stop at McD's. She had to be pried out of the transport kennel, and basing her life experience on her lost youth and the puppies snatched from her belly----she gave everyone the cold shoulder. In the morning, in the dark she would sing the morning call, "We Don't Eat What the Labrador Eats," then retreat to a blanket island to watch for sundown. It was a very big deal when Anne patched the front door for me---shockingly, Thalia stomped to the porch with all the clatter and roar of power tools to superintend. She was eleven when she entered rescue, twelve and a half when she left Texas. Nudging sixteen when she passed.

Some dogs take time to settle, there is never a need to rush a rescue's heart.

So true. I miss Thalia and her reports from her trusty Commodore computer. Such a special girl.

I can't help but wonder how this can continue to go on. If everybody just bought their puppy from a reputable breeder, instead of a pet store or just anybody, this would no longer be a problem. Puppy mills make me sick to my stomach.

Puppy mills occur in back yards, one litter at a time. The funds translate into groceries, car repairs, and utility bills. Vet bills are not an expense as vet assistance is rarely sought. A recent bill in this state to regulate the industry, not shut it down, just regulate--found huge organized opposition to a bill that mandated an additional one inch turn around space in the zinc wire cages.

puppymills are terrible scenes. I got a pug from one of them years ago not knowing what I know now and that pug was blind, the breeder then let me have choice of the next litter. went there and got Otis, took him home at 4 weeks..he was the only pup to survive the torment at this ladies house and he too was blind. I called the spca. when they came to check her out.......and warn her. she took all the pugs she had and released them all on a busy highway..way up north. all the pugs were blind since the stud was blind. they all got rehomed and she was shut down...sad sad sad.
people lined up for blocks to get an adopted blind pug..............

sad how they operate. she sold all her puppies to the pet shops and i was the first one to buy one locally. good thing I did or she would still be in business. once she heard that my pug was blind, she killed and buried her mother... and then on top of that they used dna from my pugs paw to prove that in the case against her...

    just a mess

    buy responsbily people
all my dogs now came from respectable breeders and ones that show there dogs
although all of mine were bought pet quality except Gus..who was bought for show

they will continue to show up forever........not sure that there is an end to all this ever...
A pugs world is full of play and sleep and of course good food.........
