I know the law around (O. C. NJ) here says we must use a leash and it cannot exceed 6 feet. But when I took my boy for a walk to a very large open field with lovely green grass, it seemed to me he just wanted to bust loose and run but the short leash stopped him. I did what a normal Pug mom would do, I spoiled him and bought a 50’ leash.
When it came we went to the field, I figured if we go there maybe once a week in good weather he would not get used to the freedom and still walk nicely on the short leash.
The first time I hooked him to the long one he looked at me like, what! It took a few times to get used to it and to finally see that I was not leaving him he started to run, he looked like a horse cantering around his paddock, in miniature of course. It was really beautiful to watch him take off. Funny thing, he really did not go far very often, he still wants to stay within a few feet of me. I have to coax him to run and when he does he loves it. As long as I only do it at this particular field and once a week he remembers how to walk on the short leash.
This is one of the nice things I was able to do for my boy. When we go home he sleeps like never before.

I'll bet he's having soo much fun!
Jackie,Mom to Robbie & Stacy my human children and Tinker my furkid.
I got one that is 50 feet or something like that also, it was meant to be a lead hung in the air, I didn't read that part and it was when he was a puppy. He went to take off but couldn't pull the lead through the grass. It was cute.
He is having a ball.
It is a very light weight nylon, the onlyu thing just once in awhile it get caught on a tree root or something.
If he doesnm't use the last 10-15' I may just cut it down since I am the one that has to carry the excess.
I can never let him go off leash siince there are so may wild critters around here he just may run after them, that happened with my last pup, we had just moved in and she spotted a deer and chased it, she was gone for an hour, since we were at the this house only a few days I thought she got lost.
I gave one of these to Gina in the Santa exchange.....
they are awesome
I use them with my dogs too..
good for the bulldogs too......
they are great in open fields...
I would not cut it due to the fact it might fray on you..........
I just carry the excess
they are great if you need to tie out a dog somewhere is you go somewhere too......
I used to use them for camping years ago too
have a couple of them here
sounds like Buddy is having a good time
A pugs world is full of play and sleep and of course good food.........
Thanks I should have thought of this long ago even for my last dog. I am gld there are others using them also.
As for the fraying, it is nylon and I would singe the ends to avoid that but you are right I just may want it someday.
I had started to use cheap clothes line that was totally plastic and that also works if you don;t want to pay $15.00
got it at a dollar store, actuallyu it works a little better since it is a bit lighter. I keep one in my car and the other one in my truck.
Ro
I use mine at the parks here with the bulldogs too...they are plenty strong enough for them too..
the clothes line idea is good too but the long leashes here are cheap enough too.......you can find them sometimes in different stores for less money then I paid for them.
mine I got a feed mill and actually think that they are made for a horse..lol maybe but not sure....
anyhow they do work well to get the dog some extra room to run..
mine have a huge handle on the end to grab on to as well......so that is my main reason for not cutting them off other then the fraying...
A pugs world is full of play and sleep and of course good food.........
I actually prefer the clothesline since it is so much lighter than the leash, the line glides over the ground better whereas the leash sort of drags and it is not heavy at all I think it is that the line is round and the leash is flat, it is thin but not enough.
He looks more free to run when he uses the clothesline.
I too have a handle but I can always sew one on with my sewing machine it is a heavy dute one and it would work fine.
The main thing is that they get a chance to run "free" a bit each week.
I would never let him go off leash I got a scare once and I am not going to go there again.
I use a large dog retractable with Emma and say "run emma run!!!" and she runs around me in a circle.
