Default Max and I are BACK...good day....

the seniors now all know Max past story. I think if any of them could get to the person that hurt Max that they would be in deep trouble..litterally.
but they do know more about rescue now and also about fostering..
told them that Max was a foster failure and they did not understand that until I explained that to them.
told them that I fell in love with him and he stayed with me...

they wandered if all shelter dogs are considered rescues....they all asked that and I said YES...
they were all aware of the pound, SPCA and things like that...

so then we did a room to room
John is taking 25 steps at a time on his own but not enough to come back to the seniors home yet..another week or two they figure.
    he is progressing though.
Marg told me all the cool things to see in the town she grew up in..not far from here and will go there to see all of it sometime too.

she told me that in the big churches that had the double stairwells in them...like the older one here in town too...you come into the basement or foyer as she called it.........and then you had to take the steps up to the main part of the church. she said that when a church member wants a church funeral the body is at the bottom of the stairs for viewing....awkward she said but it does work. no way the body can get up the stairs with how steep they are and with the turns..the coffin does not go up there at all. so learned something new again and Max too..

Old homes in this part of the country had what was called a coffin door, a huge hatch that could be opened to the outside high on the wall if necessary to manuever furniture or coffins down the staircase and allow for the tight turns.

Wow that's interesting about the coffins. I love learning about how things used to be done before the world got so modern. Almost too modern for our own good.

Well, my degree says major in geo-politics(Soviet bloc), minor in history. Close enough, I guess. There is a building locally that now houses a print shop which used to be a gym, an antique store, the faded paint identifies it as a hardware store, but at one time it was a funeral home. Buried in their storage room is a floor mounted brass safe, only a round door appears to view. Bet the folks in the print shop have never stopped to look at it.

wander what you would find in there...
    cool eh? Ellen
love the old buildings.....so much history and truly are fascinating is how they were built..
    and so much character..

some people do not show any interest in history but it is truly much more interesting then what people believe. i did not do well in history in high school and actually did not care for it that much to be honest...but now esepcially since going to the seniors home......it has opened new doors for me.
another good thing that came out of taking Max there.............is the stories and more stories..

you help Ellen to fill the blanks sometimes only get half stories from the seniors
soo much interesting info from them though.........sometimes it is a 2 hour plus therapy day for HISTORY..lol

We grew up in a home built in 1865, it has a "parlor" with a very wide side door. This room was used for the coffin's viewing since there was not a funeral home at the time. Needless to say as kids we didn't like that room much!

Also learned that the stairs are set with every fourth one a little longer lip this was to trip up "unexpected" guests aka bad people who didn't know the homes. that is also why the floors in the older homes squeak! An old time burglar alarm (or better known as can't sneak out of the house um not that I would have )

    wow that is soo cool
I love the history in the old houses too
and in the churches too and so on.......getting more and more interested since going to the seniors home......... going to look into the history of this building that I am in since was built in 1885 or something like that.....not sure what it was back then..lol

I wandered about that oo...about not likely that many funeral homes back then..so makes sense that some houses were used for that purpose..

I might take a walk and see if I can see some coffin doors..lol. lots of old old homes around here so might....

had no idea about the steps though......and creaky floors are for sure creaky in old houses..
