I finally realized the crazy noise coming from my babe is a reverse sneeze. She always seemed to d it after she had eaten something she wasn't supposed to. Trying to chew on paper or the wicker basket in the bathroom. The whole time I thought it was her gagging and I always would try and pry her mouth open and shove my fingers in to get the stuff out but I never found anything. Finally it dawned on me that it was a reverse sneeze. It sounds terrible but I am in hysterics now every time she does this. The ooh on her face when it happens. She always turns her head to the side like "mama what was that, why you laughing". Am I the only one getting enjoyment from this. HAha.
On youtube you can view videos of dogs reverse sneezing to see if that's what is happening with your pug. I wouldn't say I get enjoyment out of it, but I do try to get my pug to relax so she will stop the reverse sneezing.

Winston does it sometimes but I don't find it remotely funny. It seems quite uncomfortable for him and I can tell that it makes him anxious.

All my dogs have done it from time to time, but Joy seems to be especially prone to it. I always worry that she's gonna cut her own airway off if she doesn't stop. I monitor her closely. If she does it more than about 3 times I gently rub her throat and talk to her until she seems to relax.

I have to admit that I had to laugh at a situation the other night because Leto started to reverse sneeze in the yard and wanted to bark and the neighbours chi at the same time, and he sounded just like a duck. He was stomping around the yard quacking at the top of this lungs and I couldn't catch him to help (I can get him to stop by pinching his nose) because it was so icy and I couldn't keep up. I was laughing more at the image we would make than Leto himself -- like others have said it seems to make him quite anxious.

Actually, it makes me quite anxious as well when Lola does it, as it truly seems like she can't breathe while this is happening.
Although, a lot less anxious once I learned what was actually occurring as opposed to thinking that she was actually choking on something. Still kind of distressing for both of us as she gets this really scared look on her sweet smooshy face.

I think it is her facial expression. Pugs have so many expressions and it is just the way he looks at me. Its more of a haha aww you poor baby. I always make sure she is ok. I dont mean it to sound like a am a mean mommy laughing at her expebse. I feel terrible when it happens but the expressions she makes. They really do communicate to us with their looks. Their little bug eyes and i swear she uses her ears too. I just cant help it. She is too stinkin cute. I do wish i could make it stop. Now she has taken to dramatic yawning. We were i the car an daddy would t let her get on my lap since i was driving. She kept whinig and then lets out this big long loud yawn. And not just once. They are too smart for their own good.
I'm with you with the hysterical facial expressions... When Leto is play fighting with Wally he wrinkles his face and shuts his eyes and looks for all the world like a prune.

They have the BEST facial expressions. I know about the loud yawn. Hyper little Ozzie does it whenever we tell her to stop doing something (barking at the television, using Winston as a chew toy etc etc). It's very obviouisly a way for her to release tension. It's quite cute.

The yawn is one of my favorite. Spud will be barking at a dog on TV and have this serious look on his face and barking and instantly transition into a yawn...its bed time.
