Default THUMBS UP OR DOWN to walking on a leash for your dogs???

all of my PUGS are thumbs down but Max. he is awesome on a leash and stays right with me...actually would not even need a leash to walk him although I always do.
Zeena and Zeus are THUMBS DOWN and double down on the leash. I hope someday they get it..lol
the BULLDOGS are both awesome on a leash and never pull.
the two pugs make up for the rest of the pack here

so out of 5 dogs...3 are great and 2 are NOT..lol
    and your dogs??
A pugs world is full of play and sleep and of course good food.........

Whiskey is great on a retractable leash, but i quickly learned that he needs a lot more work walking on a leash if say we are in petsmart and i need to keep him closer.

We bought a Harness for Otis, he pulls a lot and we were afraid that with a collar leash could get loose and he could run into the street.
So thumbs down to a collar leash. but thumbs or paws up for a harness leash

Joy's working on becoming a thumbs up but it's taking time. She stays on my left side now instead of zig zagging, stops when I stop, pulls less and is getting the hint that passing cars are not toys. If she sees another dog, she ignores it but her people manners are dreadful - she's all over anybody she sees just lapping up every bit of attention. This is a problem in the house or out, on the leash or off, in the pet shop, at the vet - reservations are about to be made for obedience school!!!

the 2 pugs are all over the place...and I taught all my dogs the same way
Max came here at 6 months with no skill on a leash and in a day or two had it down pat..but the other two they are terrible...even obedience I do not think will help that

I would never use a collar on a pug
    always a harness
they can get out of the collars
the vet lost my blind pug when he put him out on the vets collar in the morning for a piddle before he was neutered years ago and he rain about 7 miles actually. lost for well over a night and day and into the next day before I got him back. I told the vet to NEVER Take off his Harness or any of my dogs harnesses if they are outside. plus the fact that i do not like the idea that a collar can get caught on a kennel ect.
in the house they run naked usually..but outside on a harness all the time.all 5 of them

My dogs are all thumbs up and have never, ever had a choice in the matter. They never step paw out the front door that they are not harnessed and leashed. Puppies grow up in Harness, older dogs have their manners brushed up. Public manners are must. Baster is 90 lbs, remy has social issues, Mandy is - well, Mandy, and the Doxies are little dogs that as a breed can be snappy.
They will never see a retractable leash as I see them as dangerous. Each and every scuffle Baxter has been in at PetSmart has been started by a dog on a retractable leash whose owner thinks it is cute to let their dogs greet inappropriately. Just because a leash is 10' does not mean the dog has to either choose the length it wants or be at the very end of the leash. Mine all have 8' leashes with a spare handle knotted in ... because that is how I was taught as a kid.

Diesel is great. If we're not walking near a road we actually take him off the leash.

Boo still needs a bit more work. He's pretty good usually but we've learned from walking on the beach that if he smells something or sees something interesting he'll take off and you have to chase him down.

Thumbs up! And this is our only option as city dwellers with no yard.

Though Dexter was okay on the leash when we got him two months ago, I worked on teaching him to leave slack on the short leash, and now I would say he is pretty good. I don't plan on teaching him to heel. I'm fine with him walking 2-3 feet ahead of me with some slack on the leash.

He will pull only when he sees another dog, but we're working on that. Today, we went to an on-leash event at the public library. He did a lot of pulling to say hello to the other dogs for the first 30 minutes and calmed down a little at the end. However, as long as there are no dogs around, we have very calm walks around a very busy central business district where there are hundreds of people, cars, noises, and smells.

Many people with dogs in the city choose to housebreak them to potty pads, litter boxes, etc. Since Dexter was 100% trained to go outside, we decided not to break this mentality. This means a 7am wake-up, get dressed, ride in the slow elevator, walking across the street to the nearest grass. But I wouldn't have it any other way!

Tinker has never walked without a leash. We walk twice a day and she goes in our backyard in between times. She gets ahead of me on our walk going but walks beside me on the way back because she's tired.

Minnni is a thumbs up. Since we have no fenced in yard, her walks are all on a leash.SHe gets to run free at the dog park. She never wants to be outside by herself and I wouldn't be comfortable with that anyway.
