we just found out piggy has a new favorite word "gurke" (german for cucumber) she LOVES them. hopefully she will not figure out where they come from, otherwise it will be the same as with the strawberries. she goes in the garden and picks them gently

Default Words an obedience/rally Pug needs to know!

Stubby knows sit, stay, down, wait, over, take it, around, stand, heel, finish, left, right, hold it, closer, give, keep up, slow, quick, all right as well as all the hand signals that go with them during competition. He also knows some regular words such as treat, cheese, cookie, no, ok, where's your ball (to put the food in), dog park, go for a ride, dad's home, bed time, and his favorite phrase of all time - dog school. During rally-o you are allowed to talk to your dog the whole time so he gets lots of verbal cues and encouragement. I just love the way Pugs turn their heads when they listen and even if he doesn't actually know all the words at least he is very good at faking it! That's one of the reasons I love him. Congratulations to all the smart Pugs out there who are proving they have a great command of the English language.

Of coulrse a lot of his "Responses" to the commands were initally triggered by food as all Pugs seem to. We train at least 2 classes a week and have so for the past 5 years. All the words/commands are paired with certain circumstances to start with. The trick is to get him to respond the same way each time and on cue during the activities. Some of the agility people also use commands that name specfic obstacles such as table. tunnel. weave etc and I watch in amazement as the dogs start looking for them as they finish the previous one. One of the first things my 2 year old grandson learned to respond to verbally was "take it"......and then he wanted the dog's dumbbell to be placed in his mouth to hold and then "give" which gave him the chance to drop it onto my hand just like he saw me doing with the dog. Sure was glad Social Services had not dropped in and seen him doing the dog obedience thing as they may have gotten the wrong idea! My son (his Dad) used to lock himself in the dog cage to eat his cookies in peace and not have the dogs begging or stealing them before he had eaten them.
