Question Is Pug Appreciation an Acquired Taste?

I had another person tell me that they thought Pugs were ugly this morning. I have always thought they were a good looking breed. Of course, I like the looks of all the wrinkled breeds. So, my question to you all is “Is the appreciation of the beauty of our Pugs innate or an acquired taste?” I’m talking about looks only, not personality.

I agree, it's likely innate, but a matter of taste -- does one prefer the smushed-in human-like face, or the long nosed wolf-like one.

For me.. definately! I often say I never imagined myself with a pug... Gordie's " hobby breeder" lives right next door to my inlaws. I remember clearly the day the pups were born. And the next day we met "big boy" aka Gordie Howe. We watched the litter grow and flourish and when the day came around 9 weeks and he started to consider selling his pups I had to take one home! I totally fell in LOVE with them!!! And I was definately a big dog only lover.

I had never given pugs (or other small dogs) much thought either way. I preferred big dogs, huskies, shepherds, etc. Then one day I was cleaning carpets in a customer's home who had a pug....he was so funny and adorable....from then on I fell for the breed.

    Take care,

I have always loved the smushie nosed breeds but I do know people that think they are ugly. It is definitely a matter of taste. I don't think my mom was too thrilled about pugs...until she met Buddy! How can you not fall in love with a pug once you've spent a bit of time with one?

I had wanted a Bulldog when I was a child. I've always liked the wrinkly faced dogs. Once I was on my own, I started doing research and found out a Pug would be a perfect fit for me. It's honestly the only breed I will ever own. I find the long nosed breeds "funny" looking now that I am so used to looking at my beautiful wrinkly faced Pugs.

I have never heard anyone say pugs are ugly, though I didnt always think they were all that cute, but I wouldnt say ugly. They didnt become adorable until I met mine though.

Hah, my coworker today, when I told him about our latest adventures, said "Oh so you ended up with an ugly dog...." I told him I thought she was adorable.

I honestly did not think one way or another about pugs. My husband, ironically enough, has always wanted a pug.

I love all animals, and don't think any animal is ugly. Their beautiful spirits shine through, even if the package is a little knarly.

Oh, have to admit, I did see coverage of the ugly dog contest, and um, well, a couple of those dogs really ARE ugly!! hehe.

I myself had to be "Pugged" before I truly fell in love with the breed! We have always had "farm" dogs, large mutts, cow dogs, Labs etc... until 2 years ago when we aquired Rosie, or I should say she aquired us! It was love at first snuffle and I am and always will be a true lover of the breed! But I do have to say that I LOVE ALL critters, large and small so it wasn't hard at all to love any of them LOL!
