wow..really makes you shake your head........doesn't it
hope he feels better soon
the cherry eye.....will they fix that when and if they neuter him then??
poor guy
feel sorry for him
he sure has had it rough for a poor boy
Poor Winston, it's not looking good for him. tHEY EXAMINED HIM AND DIDN'T FIND ANY REASON FOR THE BLEEDING EXCEPT PROSTATE, SINCE THE ANTIBIOTICS ARE NOT MAKING IT BETTER, THEY SUSPECT EITHER A BAD ABCESS OR CANCER, NEITHER OF WHICH HAS A GOOD PROGNOSIS (sorry, caps lock). They are recommending we wait on his neuter and cherry eye surgery until we can get an ultrasound to find out what we are dealing with. Prostate surgery is very difficult on a dog and has a low success rate, so we may be looking at just keeping him comfortable until the pain or debilitation becomes too much for him. I'm going to try to get an ultrasound scheduled for next week.
Take care,
Lisa

Lisa, I fought to the death (literally) for my boy who had prostate cancer. It is very rare in dogs (and he was neutered) and difficult to treat. We went through biopsy surgery, chemo, radiation, catheters at home, tumor suppression medication and holistic treatments. We kept him going from Nov to May. It's pretty invasive, nasty stuff but we definitely found some ways to make him more comfortable, keep the prostate under control so that urine continued to flow naturally, etc. If you find that that's the diagnosis, feel free to contact me. We were only able to get a definitive diagnosis after surgical biopsy. Given that he's unaltered, he's actually got a better chance for it to be something prostate related that's non-cancerous.
Thanks Nell's Mom, what do his symptoms sound like to you?
I've got no rescue backing me on this guy, I just pulled him hoping to get him fixed up, neutered and cherry eyes done and find him a good home. He's such a sweet guy, I hope it's nothing serious.
Take care,
Lisa

I'm on my phone so I'll try to write more later but did they palpate his prostate? As for the bleeding, did they examine his penis? Later in the disease process, Hoover developed a lesion on his penis and that did bleed (and was very painful). Is he having problems with urination? The urethra runs through the prostate so if the prostate is inflamed, it will constrict the urethra and make urination difficult (or impossible).
Yes they palpated the prostate and he said it wasn't very large. They pulled back the sheath and examined the penis which was fine, as was the sheath. He urinates and defecates with no problems and no blood in it at all. There is no pain, nor does he lick the area, he seems totally oblivious when it happens. He doesn't hump objects or anything and there are no intact or in season females in the immediate area.
he bled again this morning before breakfast.
Take care,
Lisa

Accepting that bullies are surely as problematic as pugs over anesthetics--I would have him sedated and the whole organ more carefully examined. As I think about it, Anne is an expert on equine penile cancer--I'll send her an email and wake her up. I am thinking congenital vs kick vs dog bite. And may have been the reason his folks dumped him.
Yes, because he came from the shelter we have no idea of his history. He could have been doing this for years, or it could be a brand new problem for him.
Take care,
Lisa
