In the last week, fifteen pugs have appeared on the local Craigslist, many advertised as young and unspayed. As the economy darkens, a byb can easily acquire enough breeding stock to keep a litter going every month in rotation, sell the puppies for a hundred a piece and have a healthy non taxable income. Upkeep is simple, no vet bills and the cheapest food possible. Now the City of Tulsa has proposed to severely limit rescue operations to no more than three dogs per house, but grants unlimited possession of puppies under four months. A clear victory for the back yard breeder to profitably dump more puppies on the market who will eventually find their way to shelters, rescue, and the side of the road.
Ugh, why do lawmakers not "get it" when it comes to BYBs?

I totally agree with you all. I get very frustrated with the whole thing and tend to get myself in trouble with people who "think" they are doing the right thing by breeding to suppliment their income. I know a lady that breeds her Great Dane every year & her Bull dogs, in seperate litters of course. Last time her danes got very sick, and complained about the $$$. I suggested that she stop breeding for a while and clean up her house (which is littered with dog feces, human trash, etc--ICK!), and allow the animals to rest, & hopefully get their health back. She snapped back at me that because her husband was dead this was her only form of income. I told no so that that she needed to find something else besides taking her kids' 4-H money from the sales of their animals, lose some weight ( she is well over 300lbs at only 42), and find a real source of income. I even offered her to come work at my store part-time (it is suffering), to help her out. I guess my point is, there are way too many people that are lazy and cannot see outside of the box. Needless to say I no longer speak with this lady......I feel so sad for the animals and the kids.....

The health of the animals should have precedent over the 'rights' of a human to breed them.
