So.
We've gone and done it again. We are fostering a small boy who was found wandering on the streets of a nearby town. He's just 15lbs and was infested, really infested with fleas when he was found. The fleas are gone, but his skin is in rough shape. He's rib-thin (maybe 4lbs underweight?), just got neutered and has super flakey skin, the vet called it "patchy alopecia" (hair loss) and some scabs probably from itching. The skin above his tail is bare. Neg skin scraping says it's not mange - so we are thinking flea allergy/dermatitis/neglect and poor diet.
We gave him a nice warm bath using our Cain & Able Lavender dog shampoo (good for coats, skin, etc) and he seemed to like that a lot. He was just neutered. We are feeding him what our pugs eat, Halo Spot's Stew, pumpkin, non-fat plain yogurt and Dream Coat supplement (skin/hair supplement with lots of good things in it).
I'm thinking that with care and a proper diet, we'll see an improvement in his skin. My question for anyone who's dealt with this sort of thing : how long does it take for these sorts of things to resolve - months? I'm not expecting any overnight miracles - but just wonder if there's anything else we should be doing for him?
He's about the cutest thing. Right now he's sitting at my feet, staring at me - and so much reminds me of Lulu. He's got that puppy-type face she had and he's little. And he worships me (ok, he sort of worships all of us!). He's for sure a lapdog too, talkative, good on the leash. And I'm happy to report that since his neutering, his humping has (knock on wood) disappeared. My DH really likes him. We need to find him a new home soon or we won't be able to give him up!
Repeat after me:
"Three is too many"
"Three is too many"
"Three is too many"
"Three is too many"
See what I mean?

He is adorable hope he finds a home soon
Awww.....so cute!!! You are doing everything right and he should start improving quickly.
If things aren't looking 100% better in a month, he may have food allergies, and will need a diet evaluation at that point.
Take care,
Lisa

awww, he looks cute. i think we need a picture with wally and baby next to him. i need to comparison in size, plus i love pictures of your monsters :)
Oh, Lisa - Should he be getting once a week baths (after the proper time goes by for the neutering recovery)? He almost has what I'd describe as cradle cap on his chest. I know that with cradle cap (on kids) that you want to do frequent shampooing to get rid of it. My youngest had it and it got worse if she didn't shampoo her hair very frequently.

Here's a video of him. I mean, REALLY. How cute IS he?! Hopefully the rescue will find a great home for him soon. He deserves lots of love and attention after living on the streets for god-knows how long.

Get him on a FISH based food. natural Balance Fish and sweet potato or even better Holistic Select (Anchovy,Sardine and Salmon) ( Light blue bag).
In CFPR I usually take the skin issue dogs( mange and dry, itchy skin issues) and I use the Holistic Select and in a week you will see a totally different dog!
Also add vit E ,flax and fish oil to his food just buy the capcules and puncture them and squeeze the vit over the food. or if he takes pills well in cheese or peanutbutter put them in that.
The blacks seem to have dryer skin than the fawn also. so it is good to keep them on lots of extra oils.
It will be amazing how fast you see him improve.

yes both foods can be purchased at PETCO not sure about PETSMART. They are not cheap Not sure how much the small bags are.. I don't even look at them with 8 mouths to feed LOL. I pay $50 for the huge bag of Holistic Select. I think the Natural Balance is a bit less. I would start himon the Holistic and once he is better you could switch him over. but my guys only get 1/3 c twice a day. I would give him 2/3c twice a day to gain some weight.
