I was just perusing the Pughearts of Houston Rescue site and they have a beautiful, healthy, senior fawn female listed for adoption there that had been dropped off at a shelter to be put down because she was old! She's not even sick, no major expenses, she's old! I am just so pissed at how bad some people really suck! Sorry for the rant.
Disgusting. If she WERE old AND sick the LEAST the owner can do is take her to a vet and STAY with her through the entire process. Bad karma. Hope the previous owner has someone to take care of them when 'they' get old.
The same thing was done to my sweet old Bailey. left to be euthanized at the Lancaster, CA shelter at 14 or 15 yeas old. Next month she will be 16 or 17 and still barks, hops and spins for her dinner.
this was her shelter pic:
here she is since then:

Stephanie, pugmom to Louie Livewire, born 3/15/06 and my 2 angels waiting at the bridge....the very special Junior, my pug angel who is doing agility at the rainbow bridge 11/22/91 - 3/13/06, and the very special Danny, my first dog, a Dandie Dinmont Terrier 4/5/70 - 2/10/84
I am struggling with this issue right now, with our senior Dane. I cannot imagine casually dropping him off at a shelter! I agonize daily over whether is quality of life is compromised to the point I am doing him an unkindness not to take him into the vet to be euthanized. Just wish there was a vet who would come to our home, since he is so miserable in the car.
Montana is full of large animal vets. I am sure one could be talked into doing it for you at your home where your baby is relaxed and comfortable.

Lisa

Thankfully, she was found and rescued. The cost of veterinary euthanasia can be staggering, and you just can't talk people into spending money they don't have or feel they can budget. Vets often upsell into cremation, or charge a staggering fee to have the animal placed in a garbage sack and held in a freezer for pick up. The key is how not to solicit people to use the rescue as a convenience dump off, but to also keep these gentle seniors off the concrete and tile of the shelter. If the dane has reached the edge of his comfort threshold, can you get a vet to give you an anti anxiety tablet to take at home before you have to drive him in. All in all, this is why we owe people like Lisa and other compassionate rescues so so much.
The vets shouldn't be putting down an animal cuz it's old, Ellen!!!!!!!!!
Unless a dog is hurting, there really is NO reason!
We just got a healthy 5yr old female who was taken to a vet to be put to sleep because the Amish owner wasn't going to breed her anymore. Thankfully the vet called our rescue instead.
