In Kern County at the Bakersfield shelter they received 180 dogs from a hoarding situation, all either had Sarcoptic Mange or had been exposed to it. This is a shelter in a poor and rural area, already overwhelmed with the dogs it has. There was no room for these dogs, they were quarantined on the fairgrounds nearby. Release to qualified rescues only. When I talked to the coordinator, 6 had been taken, 23 were scheduled to go the following day. She was up all night trying to get these innocent babies into care.
Thankfully there was only one pure pug, pretty badly mangey....but otherwise healthy. There were also a few pug mixes. Central Coast Pug Rescue took the little mangey pug and an adorable pug/peke mix. Sarcoptic mange is difficult for rescues because few fosters will take a sarcoptic dog. It is highly contagious. Most of those 180 dogs will be euthanized.
Yesterday I pulled an adorable little boy from the Riverside shelter, had ulcers in both eyes, the left eye very bad and demodex mange....according to the shelter vet....I carried him to the Roadster and delivered him to the second transporter who took him to his vet appointment in San Diego. I got a call from her soon after I got home, sarcoptic mange...not demodex. The Roadster got a misting of insecticide. my clothes washed and double dried, arms, hands washed with bleach. Sigh.....

Wow...I can't imagine any shelter being prepared to take 180 dogs. My prayers go out to that coordinator, hoping she's able to find help for many more of them.
I'm glad to hear that you were able to help little Jake; hopefully he will be feeling better soon. And fingers crossed that your disinfecting did the trick.
We all appreciate what you do for all of the animals you have tried to help. There will be a very special place in heaven for people like you. May these poor souls survive.
