Today the staff lady and man took me on a long drive. I came to a house with a lovely lady named Robin and her two grown sons, their pug Bob, who is 10, and three cats. I remember Robin from Pugs and Kisses - she gave me cheese, she's nice! Bob and I sniffed butts and decided we liked one another. The cats were a little afraid of me, but I just ignored them. I went out to the backyard and sniffed and peed a few times and came in to set with the new people and get petted. They think my teeth are beautiful and they like me a lot already. I told the staff lady it was okay to leave me here, I will be fine and I will be a good boy for these people. Bob is a bit "fluffy" so I am hoping i get similar treatment!!
I think life will be good from now on.
It's nice to be home.
Love,
Edgar

Aww that is wonderful news! I got all teary-eyed reading this. I know he has found a happy, forever home, but it must be just heartbreaking to say goodbye.
I do not know if I would be able to foster. You are so brave Lisa. And you too Edgar :)

I got a little teary-eyed, too. It's so sweet when they find furever.
We never touch people so lightly that we don't leave a trace.
Everyone always thinks it's hard to give up your fosters. It is, but it isn't. We bring them into our homes, we nurse them through illness or injury, we put weight on or take weight off. We potty train. We give them love, let them on our furniture, our beds and most of all into our hearts. If they pass in our care we cry into their fur and grieve for them just like they were a dog we had owned since a puppy. We stay up nights caring for them, spend money we don't have to get them the best foods and care to give them the new start they need. We fall for every one, head over heels.
But the best dogs, the young dogs, the healthy dogs, the beautiful dogs, the great dogs....we know they have somewhere they are going...they have a life beyond us. If we kept them we would soon be unable to take the next one....the one who might die in the shelter cold and alone and afraid and in pain. I can't bear the thought. So we are overjoyed when they find their forever and move on. I have cried my eyes out for every foster who has died in my care, even those I only met a couple hours before....but I have never cried when delivering a dog to his new forever home. I always celebrate....and get ready for the next one.
Who do I keep, who stays with me forever? The old, the broken, the sick, the leaky, the crippled, the blind, the deaf, the dieing, the unwanted.....the unadoptable. They are the ones that need us, that need our loyalty and love. They need someone to help them lead comfortable lives and give them unconditional love, even if they just sprayed diarrhea all over the carpet at 2 in the morning, even if you have to sit with them for half an hour and hand feed them french fries with slivers of pills stuffed inside, hold them in the shower while they fight to breathe or set your alarm to ring every two hours through the night to put ulcer drops in their eye.
That's why wonderful, perfect sweet dogs like Edgar don't stay...they have better places to go ---and I celebrate that with happiness when they leave.
Take care,
Lisa
