Got a call yesterday about a pug that was turned into the Brampton Animal Shelter. He's 5, diabetic and blind. The owner took him to the shelter to be euthanized. Apparently he's moving out of the country and tried to find him I home. I'm not believing that, I'm a skeptic. Lucky for rescue they called and I was on it like flies on s**t.
Sweet, sweet boy. He was in need of a bath and his nails are wicked. Have probably enough insulin for 2 days tops. After a lesson on giving the injections, I scooped him up and brought him home. Luckily the shelter got all his vet records faxed over, all 20 pages!!!!
My vet was excellent when I called, they told me to come right in with the records and told me what to do.
He's going in today at 4:00 for his initial checkup, bloodwork and fecal. I do need more insulin and needles so will also pick that up today. He may need to go back tomorrow for a glucose curve test. I'll know more later today. I didn't know if I could do it, it's really not hard at all. I need to give him 5 units of insulin 2x a day.
He is your typical happy pug, eats great (which was my big concern) and is full of kisses. He's pretty good at getting up the deck and can go down but with a bit more caution.
On a happy note, they now have me in the computer as officially a foster home and so I am cleared to be over the limit.
Here's Nikko....
He knows his name and in the last picture I was talking to him. Love his head tilt. He kind of reminds me of Ringo!!

If you think dogs can't count, try putting three dog biscuits in your pocket and then give him only two of them.

Aw, he's a sweetheart. I have a soft spot for blind dogs because of my Teddie having gone blind.
Don't know if I mentioned it, but one night years ago I took her out in the winter to walk her and she refused to go down the driveway. Just would not set foot there. I tried to convince her, but had no luck, so we turned around and went back inside. In the early morning light, I saw that the entire section of the driveway that I was trying to get her to go down was covered with a thin sheet of ice. I couldn't see it in the dark, but somehow she sensed it and kept us from going there and probably falling. That's when I stopped thinking blind dogs were helpless.
A big hug to Nikko - are you fostering him or keeping him? With that adorable face, I don't know that I could let him go!
