He has PK in both eyes but not a concern since he is blind from the cataracts caused by the diabetes.
He's lost weight since the last vet visit in March, my vet feels he wasn't as regulated as he should have been. If he was he should maintain his weight. Drew blood for the heartworm, wellness and a serum fructosamine. I got the vet that specializes in diabetic animals. Also checked his glucouse level and it was good. Since I don't know what he'd been eating (vet records said Beneful but that's not what was in the container) I have to watch him closely. He may need his insulin adjusted since he's on a different diet. She said chances are since he's now on a high quality food he will need to change his dose.
Test results will be back today and she's going to call me. We'll go back in 3 weeks and do another serum fructosamine and glucouse and go from there. I have to keep a real close watch in the middle of the day to make sure he doesn't become lethargic, if he does I will need to feed him.
Once he's regulated he will need to stay on the same food for life, any change in diet will change his insulin dose.
He was good as gold when she drew the blood, I'm sure he's so used to it by now. She did say that his life expectancy is not as long as a healthy pug given the fact that he has diabetes at such a young age. Most animals don't get it until they're a lot older. In true pug form, the little man gave kisses to all the staff.

Glad you've got a vet who really knows this subject so well. We have some experience with human diabetes in our family, so I understand about watching for that mid-day slowdown.
Good luck to Nikko! After all, who knows how much time any of us has? I know he'll be loved every day of his, for his whole life, and that's pretty good (for any of us!)

Good for you, and good for the vet. He is now in a safe harbor.

If you think dogs can't count, try putting three dog biscuits in your pocket and then give him only two of them.
