So I'm a bit annoyed. Yesterday we took Charlie too his second basic training class - he is certainly the youngest in the class at 16 weeks - which is the youngest you can be in this class and by far the smallest dog. In the first class the teacher was all like awwww Pug, I always have one in my class...and I was like oh really, why is that? So she's like well you know...Pugs aren't the highest on the scale for intelligence...they are for cuddles...so I tried not to be insulted and just let it slide...so she was like oh can he lie down, my friend and I have a bet on this! So my husband showed her how Charlie can lie down (really he can sit, stay, come and lie down) and she was all amazed. Yesterday's class was the one where the dogs were actually taught to lie down and again we got the Awwww Pugs...excuse me, he layed down EVERY single time we asked...Nice lady, but I did not care for what she was implying! Agreed, I think he's stubborn, so not the easiest in the world to train, but he still gets it! Anywho, that was my vent - thanks for listening :)
Shame on that trainer!!!! I've had similar experiences in the past and if I was your class, I would've been totally annoyed too!!! Most of the pugs I know are super-smart, sometimes too smart for their own good! And as for the stubborn behavior, it's just a matter of finding the right incentive (usually food!) and a little patience.
My pugs know way more stuff (not just tricks, but words in conversation) than any previous dog I've had of various different breeds. They are the smartest dogs I've had. Wonka is very cooperative and eager to please, but even Nilla, with her mile-wide stubborn streak, is one smart little cookie!!
Thanks! I agree Charlie will do just about anything for food! I believe when he doesn't do anything it's not he doesn't know, he just isn't interested! lol - a stubborn little guy...
