    Default eatting poo

    Hi

I'm a new pug owner and first time dog owner. I don't know if this is normal but my puppy Buster eats his poo . I'm always there to pick it up, but it seems like were in a race now of how fast he can eat poo before I get to it. Any suggestions? and is this normal?

On "Its me or the Dog" Victoria dealt with a couple that rescued pugs. She said that it was a common pug problem. She used something called the "flag" technique. You place these flags around their poo and with postitive reinforcement and treats they slowly learned to stay away from the flag areas where their poo lie go to animalplanet.com and look up "It's me or the dog"

Both my female pugs ate/eat poo Maisie grew out of it, Pickle still does it at 8 months old. I think Squig did it once or twice. They don't eat their own though, only the neighbourhood cats

I used to not have poop eaters. Then I rescued a English Bullie who lived to eat poo, he moved on, but he taught mine to eat it too!! Bear, Peaches and Cleo will all eat poo....even fight over it. We race for it....when I see it happen....blech. I aso have two which are fecal incontinent.....so poop happens a lot around here!

I tried the corprophagia (sp?) tablets, but it didn't seem like it helped much. Victoria's flag method is impractical if you have 9 dogs, like I do along with a full schedule. If someone knows of a safe food additive that really stops it, I would love to know about it.

    Take care,
    Lisa

True. The couple had 5 pugs and they struggled with it... My vet sells a food that makes the poo undesirable to poo eaters. I can get the name if you want! I saw it in the store part of my vet's office.

Racing him to the poo may only be encouraging him. If you are so "keen" on it, he may see it as a good thing to have. Personally I would try to have him on leash at the times he is likely to poo so you can lead him away and give him a treat. Then clean up later when he's not looking. He may grow out of it.

I have heard pineapple in the diet is supposed to put them off eating poo and I know there are food additives you can buy but I can't vouch for any of them personally.

I've tried every anti-poo eating treatment and suggestion and Lu Ci continues to be my pooper scooper if I don't get to it first to clean it up. While it is worth a try to see if your Pug responds I can only hope mine outgrows it at some point.

I have to agree with Snifter. The only sure way you have to avoid this behavior is have a leash on him and as soon as he has finished walk him away or have him under control while you pick up. Both of you racing for it sounds like too much of a game.
