    Default What do you do?

    Evening Everyone!

I have a question. I have began Moxie on outdoor potty training, so far we are 2 for 2 lol. But this evening I took her out around 10:30pm. We were out there for a good 20 minutes or so. She did not make potty at all and she got so cold she refused to walk, tried to run up everyone's driveway, even began with the infamous Pug Limp, etc.

Now, she hasn't pooped since 5pm, and I can't keep her outside for an hour until she poops (it's just too cold). As soon as I brought her in I got out the warming pad for her little paws, and she right away went to go pee on her pee pad (she's so very good with that). But still no poop. Now this same thing happened last night too and I woke up this morning to 2 nice surprises in Moxie's crate.

So, seeing as how I can't make her potty on command, how do I go about dealing with this so that she goes both poo and pee outside before bed time and not leave morning surprises in her crate. Treats don't work for her, she doesn't care for them (or at least not the one's I have). I've been told to stop the midnight potty breaks, and I have - and now 2 mornings in a row I've found gifts that she's left me.

Another question... Moxie is not too fond of her crate. She no longer cries at night in her crate but will not ever enter it voluntarily either. If I put her food in it, she will purposely starve herself just so that she doesn't have to enter her crate to eat. When she has a toy and wants to play gently with it, she brings it to her pee pad and will gladly sit in her own urine and play with her toys. It's so gross. How do I stop her from doing that? (And no, I don't change her pee pad after ever urine. I change it twice a day as I was told it's better for the puppy because the scent of her urine will draw her to pee there - and it works. Moxie rarely ever has accidents off her pee pad. I can count her pee accidents on 1 hand, poo is another story).

*Update* Sure enough when I woke up this morning at 6:30am Moxie left me gifts in her crate.... again! It's becoming a morning ritual.

    Thank you!

Hi - keep going. If Elsa didn't go to the toilet after a period of time I just resigned the fact that she may go in her crate. This actually didn't happen that often. She was quite quick at becoming clean at night (can't remember exactly how old but around 9-10wks). I got rid of my paper as Elsa rarely used it anyway and just took her outside at regular intervals and a treat each time she went outside and just cleaned up inside.

Elsa also won't go into her crate voluntarily - she does eat in there though! Each night I have a little chase to catch her and put her in her bed - but last night I tried a lump of cheese which she loves and threw it in - then shut the door. She has in the past gone in there to sleep during the day but I've noticed this has lessened (she uses a chair or her other day bed).

When you feed Moxie in there do you keep the door open or shut? Elsa has one feed in the kitchen and the other in the crate. I do now shut her in, but didn't at first. Elsa also doesn't cry so I don't worry too much. Persevere, the main thing I was told is don't give in, as like children they will take advantage from an early age. If you want her in her crate at night, then thats where she must be.

    Good luck x
    JJ and of course Elsa

Yes, keep going. If you take her out and she doesn't eliiminate, take her back in and immediately take her back out. Just be consistent and your message will come through.

If she doesn't want to be in her crate while she eats, place the bowl in there in stages.
Day 1: have the bowl 12 inches away from the crate
Day 2: place the bowl about 8-9 inches away
    Day 3: 6-5 inches
    Day 4: 2-4 inches
Day 5: right next to crate and touching it.
Day 6: place the bowl in the doorway of the crate
Slowly inch the bowl further into the crate each day. Go slowly and make it a positive experience for her. If she is too uncomfortable on a step, go back to the previous step. Always praise good behavior.

    Good Luck! :D
I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

When our rescue chairperson got a dog in that did that....she put the crate in an xpen with her crate there...and lined the rest of the area with wee wee pads. As the dog started to pee and poop outside the crate....she would reduce the number of wee wee pads....She was also taking the dog outside and giving treats and praise when they went outside and did something.

Also try putting a little bet outside the crate so that she can chew on things in that.

I use a crate for discipline and for good stuff. When they go in to sleep or because I'm leaving....I put in toys and give treats. If they are going in the crate as a time out or some behavior issue...they don't get anything... My guys go in and out of crates all the time! If I cannot find Kelev...I look in the crate! (I have two big ones set up all the time!) If I bring out a smaller crate for some reason...they all have to go in and investigate!
