So, I tried this today with Rebbie. I have a thick leash. I think this will be my answer for not using the harness. My problem is still that he is soo wiggly when i bring out the leash. I honestly believe part of it is excitement but I also believe that he does harbor very ill feelings towards the leash in general. Maybe it is the color red he doesn't like. Maybe it is the control aspect of what it does....I managed to get it on him by giving him a kong with yogurt in it. As soon as we started walking he started to protest.
My concern is that I couldn't get the leash to sit behind his boy part. I don't want his boy part to be hurt! We only had it on for like 2 minutes.
Do i need to get another leash that is not as thick? Will that help the leash sit where it needs to sit? I know a big part of this problem is my not training rebbie. I don't want to go to petsmart and have found a local kennel club but they haven't posted the training times yet.
I think that a thinner leash will work better -- how thick is the one you're using? We have a 1/4 inch, so it doesn't take much room. The thicker leashes tend to be heavier too, and not as pliable. It wouldn't matter as much on a bigger dog, but with these guys we don't have as much room to play with.
I know some people put it in front of the penis, but I have found especially with Wally (who is a minimalist in that department) the leash slips back and pinches it. So behind works better for both our guys. maybe you could try it in front and see how it works for you?
Good for you for looking up obedience classes -- training will definitely help with your wiggly guy! :)

It is probably an inch wide or thick. I have no idea why i bought such a big one for a pug. LOL. I will get a thinner one very soon.
LOL.... well, pugs ARE mastiffs.... you were ready in case he grew or got strong, right! :)
Word to the wise if you are going to go to classes -- get a 6 foot long training lead, not a 4 foot one. Save you a trip back to the store.

He is doing better on this method. He doesn't pull nearly as bad and I am treating him anytime there is any slack. However, it seems to slack off when he gets tired. There seems to be a constant pressure. It isn't tight, tight. But it is pulled snug.
That's great, and I'm sure the obedience classes will help, forst with learning, and second in tiring him out!! He really sounds like a little guy with an awful lot of pent up energy.
