Default Going in house after neutering

We just had Iggy neutered and expect a little problem here and there especially since he also got a UTI after the procedure was done. Now he will suddenly just let go where he stands. Example, he couldn't wait one minute for me to get his leash today to take him out, just peed right there in front of me. Is this just a result of the neutering/UTI or are we going to have to retrain him? He would always let us know he had to go out, now we have to take him out quite frequently during the day and hope he doesn't do anything during the night.

It'll probably be the UTI - classic sign of a UTI in a housetrained dog is sudden inappropriate peeing. Give him some time for the meds to work. In the meantime take him out more often as you are doing. Reinforcing the training by praising and treating when he goes outside won't hurt. Clean up any inside accidents thoroughly and hopefully all this will soon be behind you.

I agree with Bella. It is also not unusual for a dog to regress some with the trauma surrounding a surgery--being left in a strange place, withholding food, etc. Especially with him letting loose in front of you like that, almost guarantee it is the UTI.

Ever had one? I don't know if it is the same for dogs exactly as people, but those things HURT. The bladder will spasm, which is painful, and then all the sudden you pee without any volition. And I was a GROWN UP with many many years of potty training under my belt.

Poor little punkin. If it does persist, just be patient. Sometimes even adult dogs need to go back to square one; that is the advice I was gotten with our rescue dog. She started to have a few accidents after weeks of nothing. Treat it as if it is day one. Worked like a charm in only a few days. I was told, with her and her unknown and probably traumatic past, she might be more easily triggered by stress to urinate inappropriately.

Yeah, all of that is what I though it would be. We know it is a UTI, we took a sample to the vet two days after he got snipped and they gave us pills for him. He did it again too... this time he was actually in my lap... The second time he has peed on me.

Hope the meds catch up quickly and the UTI resolves.
