Default Pug always poops when put into his crate!

We are in the middle of housebreaking our 4 month old pug, but he doesn't seem to mind eliminating in his crate during the daytime.
The crate isn't too big, just big enough to stand, lay down, turn, and he is only left in it during the night or if he is being left unattended for short periods of time during the day. Someone is almost always home during the day while I am at work, so he isn't left in for extended periods of time. He is brought outside before going in to the crate, and immediately after being brought out.
However, even if he has just gone recently, he will poop immediately when put in the crate during the daytime and then step all over it and I will have to take him out to clean up as I am trying to leave the house. (It's like he saves some, I can't even believe how often he is able to go!) He also screams like he's being murdered and throws himself all over the crate. It's odd because during the night he is perfectly calm in the crate and is able to make it through most nights without having an accident. I think he may be doing this because he knows that when he makes a mess in the crate, he always gets taken out. Either that, or perhaps the stress of causing such a fuss makes him lose control of his bowels. Does anyone have any suggestions to stop this behaviour? I feel like I'm rewarding him for making a mess by letting him out, but if I don't he will get covered in poop!

Is it possible to put him in a Xpen during the day instead? I would continue to treat and praise for good behavior and ignore bad. Is he walked long enough before he gets put in the crate during the day to finish? Good luck and I hope the behavior stops soon.

For a while we were putting him into a large crate that had enough room for his bed as well as a training pad, but he was still pooping on the pads and walking all over it. I've been trying to eliminate the use of training pads because I don't want him to get too used to going in the house, plus after I started using them he began to think that every rug/mat in the house was a bathroom spot. Maybe I should bring him out a little longer in case he needs to go more than once in a row. A few times I've caught him just pretending to go when outside (squatting but not doing anything) and then trying to get back in. sneaky little bugger! hehe
