Default We have a barker on our hands

My pug is 6 mos. old! She is the sweetest thing ever, and loves people when she can get close enough to them. She is very much socialized and even goes to dog parks and visits with my friends and their dogs from time to time. She never wants to do more than play with them! However, Maizy has become a stalker of sorts and likes to stare out the window. Well, she was tearing up my blinds so i figured lifting the blinds up would be easier than chasing her all day to get her down from the window. Plus, I do not mind her looking out the window or sitting on the back of my couch. However, Maizy barks when anyone passes by and I cannot get her to stop until they go away! This is so weird because she loves people and goes crazy for them when she sees them in person and not through a window. What are some training techniques I can use to help her understand that barking is not desired and to stop when I correct her?

Sorry I have no answers for you but I just wanted to let u know that your not alone. My pug is 5 months old and does the same thing. She even does it when she hears a car drive by but she also runs and jumps at the front door (which is full panel glass so she can see out it) and barks like crazy. She always makes me think someone is at the front door lol. I was wondering how to get her to stop too!!

Try a noisemaker. Put some coins in a can and give it a shake when she starts barking. It's amazing how quickly Minni stops!

there is actually a citronella collar that is available and it works great..
you just put it on and they dog barks and it puts off a smell they do not like
my mother used it on her daschound with great success....and now she just needs to see the collar and she is fine

all my dogs will bark out the window here though
short bark and all is fine
not everyone gets barked at either..lol
    not sure why
A pugs world is full of play and sleep and of course good food.........

This is normal dog behaviour. She is telling you that there is a stranger on your territory. Both my pugs, who also love people and other dogs, do the same thing. Remember that barking was considered a desirable thing when when dogs began living with humans. They alerted us to intruders. So, the dog is not doing anything 'wrong'. She is doing something she was originally bred to do. Personally, I disagree with citronella collars except as a last option. IMO, it's better you teach your dog the command 'no'. That way you can stop the barking and any other unwanted behaviour.

The best way to train a dog is to be one step ahead of the dog and to prevent the dog from doing what you don't like.Stop her before she starts barking and reward the silence.

Haven't any advice here, we keep all our blinds closed for this very reason. People must think we are hermits, lol.

I've no answer for you, Bear is a notorious barker and there isn't anything I've tried that has worked ) : But I haven't tried the Citronella collar yet and think I might just have to do that!!! He barks at EVERYTHING!!!! The TV, Birds that fly past the window, shadows, heck even the wind *sigh* He is a rescue and Lord only knows what he has been thru or allowed to get away with, but we love him and try to live with his noisy lil self...

Coins in the can is amazing. I just adopted a Pit Bull Mastiff who was a huge guardian barker. After 2 nights with the can, if the can is in the same room with him he wont utter a peep. He HATES the can lol

Also water in a squirt bottle is great too, whenever she barks squirt her in the mouth add a wee bit of lemon juice or vinegar to add to the effect. Just watch for her eyes.

We used a squirt bottle with water in it and squirted her every time she barked. By the third day she was bark-free and has remained so.

Mine bark when someone is at the door, and as my doorbell is a bit capricious it can be quite useful.

I usually let them bark a couple of times and then say "Thank you". Sometimes I have to go and pretend to investigate whatever they are barking at and that usually quietens them. Unless it is a bird in Snifter's airspace. Then all bets are off.
