My new pug barks when I am in another room. She never utters a peep when I am in the same room with her. I read that you should never reinforce this by yelling or talking to her, and for a week, I have been silent as she yaps away! She stops as soon as I come in the room (I try to wait until she is silent, so I do not reward her with my appearance). She is a talker--she whines and whimpers a lot, even as she walks or does things she likes. I know it can be anxiety or fear--not sure if she is feeling that (I am a therapist, but I generally rely on people to tell me how they feel LOL) How can I silence the barking?
My female does this...in fact she'll often yip at us if we aren't doing what she wants. If she decides its bedtime, she'll go in the bedroom and bark at us to come to bed. When she acts like that we call her the mean old lady.
If you figure out how to make it stop, let me know!!
I think she's just letting you know that she misses you and wants you to come back. Our pugs follow us around like little shadows. If we happen to leave Winston on the top floor (he climbs up the stairs but never down for some reason) he barks to let us know we've forgotten him. I know some say that you shouldn't teach the dog that he can get what he wants by barking, but I don't give a hoot in that case. I just go up and get him and he stops barking. If he's not allowed to bark, how is he supposed to communicate to me that he wants to come down?
If your dog has had bad experiences in the past, it may be to soon to start working on obedience. I have no experience with rescues, but I imagine it might be good to let her settle in a little first. When she has, I'd start adressing the barking along with other obedience issues. I have tought Winston the word "enough" (in Swedish of course :)). He knows that it means to stop barking. I usually let him bark a couple of times and then say "enough". It works most of the time, even though I sometimes have to use my stern voice.
YOU can get a cintronella collar and that would help with training her......they work awesome and do not hurt the dog at all either. my mom usees one for her dog that is non stop barking and it helped big time.
you can also try a whistle they work good too...a little whistle and they soon do not do the barking etiher.
the other thing is pugs are very very intune with their owners and always in their face....lol. mine follow me to the bathroom..maybe call her and get her to follow you around..
is she crated in the other room? or free to roam the house
A pugs world is full of play and sleep and of course good food.........
She is crated when I cannot keep an eye on her because she is not really housebroken (working on that!) I think once she is housebroken this will not be an issue, as she will be able to follow me all over the place.
