    Default Basic obedience question

Ok Gatsby is 6 and i have had him his entire life (well from 8 weeks) and early on we taught him to sit. In September I opened my own grooming salon and i like taking my dogs to work with me (who doesn't right??) So anyway Gatsby needs some basic obedience while hes here. He doesnt jump or anything but I want him to lay down, stay, (go to) place, etc on command. 3 of my other pugs do these things no problem but Gatsby is having some issues. He is VERY food driven but beyond sit he seems hopeless. (I guess him not knowing these things already is my fault, hes kinda rotten and gets away with WAY more than he should) My other 3 werent this hard and y 7 week old pup has "sit" down already. Any tips?? Thanks in advance!

Obedience class may help, that way he's got you one on one and away from the others.

I second the obedience class. In the meantime can you pop him in an x pen if you need him to stay out of trouble?

he has a crate he sleeps in and such. hes not "bad" so to speak but he could use some extra commands i guess. I'll look into a class thanks. would a big class or a one on one at home be better?

A big class gets him used to paying attention to you in a busy environment which would probably be more helpful for when he is in the salon. It will also be a lot cheaper, and you can discuss with the trainer whether the odd one on one might help.

We really had to work on the basic commands with Nano. We found repetition was the key, but it took quite a while for him to get it. We would do 3-4 training sessions a day (about 10-15 mins each time) , and work on the same command until he had it down. The first command he got was 'sit' and once he had it down pat, we moved on to 'down'.

I think the main thing with Nano was to make sure he knew the command 100% before trying anything else. Now he can do 'sit, down, stay, shake paw, High-5, and pretty boy'. We're working on 'roll over' now, but he doesn't like being on his back so it's a big challenge.

I have also heard good things about obedience classes, but there were none in our area at the time, and i've found that we've done pretty well with our little guy. Best of luck to you!
Nano is: 9 months and 27 lbs :)
