Default Transition from pad to outside

We've had little Monty for a couple of weeks now-he has caught on to pee pad training wonderfully-we haven't had any accidents in the apartment (although his aim on the pad is not always 100%....). Now that he has had his 2nd set of shots and is OK to go outside (we have so many dogs in the area they recommended keeping him away until he vaccinations kicked in), how do we transition? It's a bit difficult because we're on the 22nd floor of our apartment building, so it's not just a matter of opening the back door the minute he needs to go-our elevators are slow :(

I've never faced this problem since we live in our own house with a back yard so this is just me thinking. Perhaps you could bring a pee pad with you in the elevator when you take him out? Have you observed his patterns so that you have a reasonable idea of how often he needs to go? Typically, a puppy needs to go directly after eating, sleeping and playing + a bunch of more times. I do think that there is a high risk that he might have accidents in the elevator at first when he's little and can't really hold it in. So, yeah, pee pad in the elevator is my best idea.

They don't normally eliminate while you are carrying them unless they are completely desperate. I would think carrying him in the elevator (with a pee pad under his bum just in case) would be the best way to go. If possible you want to make sure that he does hold until he gets outside to make the training quicker. If he has too many chances to use the pee pad on the floor of the elevator I think it will set you back.

Besides, your neighbors may not enjoy getting stuck in the elevator with you while he decides to do his business on the pee pad....LOL. If you went that route you would need to carry a bottle of air freshener too!

    Take care,

Oh why thank you! I think so too, but I'm just a little bit biased ;)

He's quite random with when he needs to go. Mealtimes are pretty set, he will usually want to go right after eating and of course first thing in the morning. But the times in between are really tough and so far when I've taken him outside, he will always wait to come back inside to pee. For example, I picked him up from my BFs workplace today and walked him from the car to our building, making sure to let him stop and sniff as much as possible in hopes he couldn't hold it any longer. Nothing. Then as soon as we get inside and I take the leash off he BOLTS for the pee pad.

I guess I should be relieved he's paper trained at only 13wks but now it seems I can't get him to stop!
