For dogs that spent most of their life in a crate, they would see a crate as punishment. I have a crate & keep the door open in case anyone needs some peace but there is no way I will crate my Molly (who lived in a cage for 5 long years). I now refer to my family room as "the dog room".

My new foster Pugsley isn't too fond on the crate either. He's going to be home all day today (with a break at 2 for a long walk with my sister). I gated him in the kitchen with a new blanket, a pillow and some treats. I also put his crate in there, just in case he wants to explore. He is a marker, but since he had to sleep in the crate last night, I decided to give him the freedom of the kitchen.

I'm sure Sophie will be fine in the kitchen for a few hours.

First, start feeding her in her crate. She needs to associate the crate with GOOD things.

There are instructions on how to crate train (as well as training for many other behaviors) at www.clickersolutions.com. It's a clicker training site, but you needn't be clicker training your dog - although I will say that it's the MOST fun, quickest and most amazing way to train a dog!

    Thanks for the advice!

I went to the clicker solutions site and have downloaded all sorts of good instructions so I will start working with Sophie on that...

Also I wanted to let everyone know that she did ok in the kitchen yesterday afternoon. She was sitting at the gate and very happy to see me when I came home, but apparently she wasn't really happy when DH put her in there before he left yesterday.

    Thanks!
