Does anyone have any experience with their pug defiantly talking back to them? We are trying to teach Natasha a sit-down-stay, and whenever we say stay, she barks and woo woos at us. I'm reticent to reward her for this, so I don't give her any treats, and then she gets frustrated and runs away. This was really funny at first, but I'm afraid she's never going to learn stay. What can we do differently?
FWIW, she has barked defiantly with other commands too... she basically doesn't like it when we don't reward her with a treat right away.

Yes, they do seem to be vocal dogs.
Otto has a repertoire - grumbles, purrs, snorts, barks (high, piercing, woofing, low, angry, playing.....) and whines. If I tell him to do something that he doesn't want to do, he'll talk back a bit, but usually obeys. Kind of like my kids.
My husband doesn't believe me when I interpret what Otto's saying, but lately I've noticed he's starting to ask me "What did Otto just say?"![]()

Pugs do talk and we have even made up voices for them when we interperut what they are saying.
Joey is very vocal and demanding when she wants something. Oh,and I don't think you can train a pug, they train you.
When Pugsly sits and stays for his dinner he cries...he actually sounds like is is saying ohhhhhhh and whining...it happens every time...poor baby...

Ferdie can be sassy and also grumbles quite a bit and has a few woo woo's and some cat like sounds that he makes. I think they are "words" and some of them wouldn't be publishableHe doesn't really like stay and hasn't really mastered that, but he can sit, down, look, lay and come(if treats are involved)

Colleen and Princess Ruby Isabella, my beautiful rescue pug,
who both are missing terribly our beloved
King Ferdinand Pugnacious who left us on Sept 17, 2006, for the Rainbow Bridge, so that he could eat anything he wants and live happily ever after.
and our precious
Sir Rupert Antonio Van Wrinkle, an adorable rescue pug, who brought the joy back into our lives for a brief time, but left us too soon on Aug 10, 2009, to join his older brother whom he had never met.
Both of my boys talk back to me.. quite often in fact.
In the mornings when I leave, Ping "Woo hoo's" when I say good bye. He does this every single morning and it really is the cutest thing.
When they are being scolded, both do a little low grumble. Deoji adds a whiney long snarl. It's pretty funny.. although I *try* not to encourage it by laughing at them.

Oscar talks, but doesn't really talk back when I give his commands.
The only talking back he's done is with my new training, I'm attempting a 30 min. down. He does not like it. He's fine with down & stay but not for long periods. I think I just need to go back to slowly increasing the time of the down & stay vs. trying to just make him stay down for 30 mins.
When he gets up & I make him go down again, he starts barking & whining & slowly crawling toward me, then he starts rolling over & pawing me ;) Not exactly what I was looking for.
Henry definitely talks back! He makes snoopy sounds & grumbles. He talks back the most when we try to tell him what to do (or what NOT to do).

a.k.a., Mylo and Mackenzie's mom!
Lemon used to get really mad when I'd scold her in a low voice. She'd let out this hilarious frustrated grunt right before flying into the pugtona. She doesn't do that anymore. Really, the only time she talks is when I ask her if she wants to go for a ride. She starts whining her little head off. And when we're in the car, if she thinks we're where we're going, she starts whining super loudly.
