    Default Nipping/Biting

Is nipping and biting still normal for a 10 month old pug? Dave still does this, and leaving the room & yelping loudly doesn't seem to be working. I know it's normal play behavior for a puppy, but he's 10 months now and I'm wondering if/when it's ever going to end!

How old was your puppy when you got him? If it was before 12 weeks of age they learn a lot from the mama and siblings from weeks 8 to 12...like "biting hurts". If they didn't learn it there, you will have to teach it.

He was 12 weeks old when we brought him home. Not sure if it makes any difference, but he was the alpha dog of his litter... the biggest and bossiest!

He's definitely getting better with not biting, but he's still unpredictable. One second he's fine and the next, he's lunging at our face, or other body part!

Still love him to pieces though :)

Are you feeling the teeth when he lunges (or would you if he got you!!!) or are you just feeling the mouth?

If the teeth, then you need to keep working on this. When Snifter had his nippy stage (which did not last long) I did the loud yelping but if possible he got lifted up and put away behind a babygate rather than me just leaving the room. For him that seemed to sink in better.

If just the mouth, then he has actually learned good bite inhibition and you just need to work on cutting out the lunging at you.

I am definitely feeling teeth... big, adult teeth!! He's never gotten close enough to bite my face, but I have bruises all over my arms and legs! He was actually doing really well for the past couple of months.. The biting just seems to have started up again. I'm hoping its just a phase. Unfortunately I can't put him behind baby gates anymore because he climbs/jumps over them! Maybe its time to invest in bigger baby gates :)

Tilly is 5 and she still occasionally bites when playing. She has always played rough no matter what method I used. She also grabbed my bathrobe this morning while I was walking. The girl is feeling frisky! I love her this way though.

Beasley used to nip/bite all the time when he was younger. The vet suggested that when he starts to nip or bite, firmly grasp his mouth with it closed with your thumb on his chin and the other fingers by his nose and put pressure under the chin and tell him NO really stern. apparently this pressure is uncomfortable for them, but it doesn't hurt. It worked for us...hopefully it will work for you.. I hope this makes sense.
