    Default scratching at carpet

How do i prevent my pug from scratching at the carpet? I don't know what he thinks he is getting but he rips up the carpet. I have tried the Bitter apple stuff but i don't know if it works.

Izzy used to do that as a puppy. I have no idea why. Fortunately she grew out of it. I put those plastic carpet runners over the carpet in her "area".

I got mine at one of the dollar stores and I'm sure places like Lowe's or Home Depot would have them. They are plastic with nubs on one side to keep them from moving on the carpet. Hang on, let me see if I can find a pic.

I should have said vinyl rather than plastic. Here's one.

Vivian also grew out of it, but occasionally stills decides she needs to get it out of her system. Fortunately with the exception of one carpet all are in tact.
Go to a carpet warehouse or Home Depot and you can buy them off the roll depending on how many feet you need.

    Default Mine scratches too!

Sophie is just a puppy so I hope she grows out of it. She scratches everything, the couch, my bed, her bed, the carpet and when outside she digs little holes. Who said Pugs don't dig....nothing serious,

Some dogs do this to make the spot "right", and then lie down in that exact spot. So if he lies down there after doing it, now you know why. :cheshire:

My vet said that some dogs will also do this because their nails/paws are bothering them either due to length of nails, stuff caught in their paws or some other reason. He likened it to a person having a hang nail, which, if we squeeze, usually dulls the pain from the hang nail itself. Whether this is true or not, I don't know...

If it's the same spot all the time, or perhaps even not, in addition to the very good suggest of a carpet runner, you could also get a carpet sample and give it to him to scratch at...he may just enjoy the feel of it and texture under his paws. Stranger things have happened with these critters of ours.

When I had carpet, Mimi would "fluff" it before lying down. Like Dante said, to make that certain spot just right. I don't have carpet anymore but she will sometimes "fluff" the blankets on the bed to make her nest.
