My pug, Beasley, likes to take things that he shouldn't have and then when i try to get it away from him, he runs away and thinks its a game. for instance, he finds a kleenex and starts to eat it, I say no and try to take it from him but he runs around the house like it is a game. how do i make him stop and stay when i tell him to. he knows how to stay, he has been to training classes. I am just tired of chasing him and i want him to listen when i tell him to stop and drop it. any tips????
OMGosh, we have the same thing here. Paper towels and shoes!

In your training classes, have you taught Trade or Give It? I'd say that would be your best bet, because you're right-- the fun game of chase is self-rewarding!

Ollie knows-"Let's trade". He'll even give up his bone or his ligament stick (and he loooooves a ligament stick). He gets a crunchy salmon treat or a piece of big bite kibble or whatever else I happen to have in my pocket. He drops the "blank" and gets a piece of food. Everybodys' happy.
DO NOT chase him--he'll think it's a game and of course run away. Try let's trade for awhile and he'll sonn get the idea that what you have is much better than what's in his mouth (except cat poop--the only thing Ollie WILL NOT trade for)
A quick fix whilst you are training "trade" or "leave it" is if he grabs something forbidden, run AWAY from him. Making excited noises as if you are going to run off and play somewhere. He will likely drop the forbidden article to chase you. Dogs love chase but if you can get them to chase you instead of the other way round you can use it to your advantage. If he chases you but still has the object in his mouth then pick up one of his toys and play with it, and sound really excited about it. You will look like a total imbecile, but he should drop what he has and get excited about the toy you have.

First, you should know that your running after him actually starts the 'chase' game. If you don't want him to run away, TURN YOUR BACK and walk away from him. Any time you want him to come to you do NOT chase him, because he will ALWAYS think it's a game.
You can get a little booklet, 'Calming Signals' by Turid Rugaas online from Barnes and Noble (please don't buy at Amazon - they support dog fighting) and she is an amazing interpreter of dog body language.
And teaching him 'trade' is the best way to handle this!

I just say "who wants a treat" and both dogs immediately drop what they have and head over for a treat.

Lilah does exactly the same thing when she knows she's going in a crateThere's no training her for such things (stubborn madam) so i just have to be late for work every day after 10 mins chasing her around the house.. She thinks its sooooooooooo funny
