hello my name is andres, and i am new to this website...but i need some help. My five month old pug is being really stubborn about going outside...when we first got her we tried taking her out whenever she needed to go. and that didnt work to well. now we are trying to "crate" train her. we have been doing that as of two weeks ago and at first she would go out by herself, but now she is back to her old habbits...is there any other way of potty training her? maybe something that is very effective with pugs? or should i just pay a trainer to help me out? much thanks in advance!

    Hello and welcome.

As you have posted in this particular thread I assume you have read the instructions at the top of the thread. I suggest you follow those to the letter.

What concerns me is where you say "at first she would go out by herself" because if you are sending her out by herself you will likely get nowhere. Check out the instructions - they say you should be out with her. Have her on a lead. It is very important that you are there to reward her the INSTANT she potties outside, not when she comes back in.

As of the crate training idea - give it time. Two weeks is nothing (although I know it can feel like forever!)

Although it can be done much quicker the majority of people on here seem to report that they did not feel their pugs were 100% reliably house trained before they were a year old. Generally by 6 to 8 months you would be pretty nearly there but that is assuming you kept up a constant training pattern that is known to be effective right from the get go.

    Default what about snow?

So I've seen people mention pugs that don't like to go out in the rain. My pug puppy, 11 weeks old, won't go out in the snow and freezing cold, and I can't say I blame her. We've had record low temperatures here lately. If I go out with her, she just shivers and trembles and stares at me.
My question is: should I just keep her out there until she does something? Is she not as cold as she is letting on? I do have a sweater for her.

My puppy is nearly 14 weeks and is seeming to go backwards in her toilet training. She sleeps in a very large box, that contains her bed and next to that, a piddle pad. She has started wetting her bed and won't piddle on the piddle pad!

When she was tiny, at 8 weeks, she understood that she had to get off the bed and simply wee on the piddle pad, now that's out the window.
I've been using the rewards method and giving her treats when she goes outside.

When she goes inside and I catch her doing it, I give her a loud NO and put her outside. It doesn't seem to be working, we do have stairs, so that is a problem (she needs somone to carry her down), but she doesn't stand at the door requesting to go outside. Any additional advice for this situation or does it just need time?

Oh the joys of pug pups!

Basically you need to give it time. It is not unusual to appear to make good progress and then have regression for a while. As long as you consistently praise and treat for going in the right place you should get there.

As for the bed - make sure you wash it thoroughly and use a product like Nature's Miracle to get all the wee smells off it or she will continue to use the bed.

Don't expect her to ask to go outside. Some pugs never do. Some pugs do, but their signals are so subtle it is hard to pick up on them. And some people have had great success teaching their pugs to ring a bell when they want out. Frankly I think it all depends on the owner and the pug.

My puppy is 15 weeks old. I have had this puppy 'toilet' since she was 8 weeks. She uses it consistently and will go on command. She still pees A LOT so I have no intention of hoping she will wait to go outside just yet.

She has a puppy pad in her crate but never uses it. She has been able to hold herself overnight. I wake her to pee before I go to bed and I'm up at about 7.30am.

When you catch her peeing label the act, i.e. go potty or be quick. If you say it consistently they will learn to go on command. I no longer need to reward her for going on her toilet but I always reward if she goes on command.

Keep at it, it takes time and effort to housebreak a pug but you'll get there if you stick at it.

These ideas sound great ! I will most certainly try them, as Suzette is not house trained yet.

    Hi,

I have two pugs, both around 2 y.o. Sleeky, the male has been with us since he was a puppy and is completely house trained. We got Coupe, a female pug about 3 months ago who is also 2 y.o as a mature ex-show dog. She was always kept outside and was not house trained.

We have had success in training her except for rainy days and some occasional accidents.

I've noticed the accidents are actually her being lazy!! Why I say this is because on a nice sunny day or after food she would go outside herself and do her pee and poo. However during rainy days and even during nice days when she is in the house lazing around, I find her sniffing around wanting to go inside the house. If I don't catch her in time, she'll do it inside the house and hide for cover when she hears me call her name as she knows she's done something naughty. However if I catch her sniffing, I will tell her "go outside" and she would go outside and do her business. Hence why I said she seems to be just lazy rather than not trained.

What I want to know is, if there is anyway I can get her to stop being lazy and go outside!!

    Many thanks in advance.
