Oliver is now 12 weeks old. We have been very consistent in following the house training guide lines and over all he was doing very well. Not peeing or pooping in the crate all night, we wake up at about 3/4 am to take him to pee and then back to bed and then we are up at 615.
Sometimes he will go to the potty all my himself and pee right where he is meant to.
This is the positive. On the negative side, he will occasionally walk into his crate and pee and this is NOT on any schedule, i.e even if he peed ten min before he may do it. We follow protocol in terms of stopping him and cleaning up etc when he does it.
This morning he did his potty on schedule and then proceeded to pee on the carpet, then later in the TV room ( where there is tiled floor) and then pooped elsewhere. He had access to the potty at all these times and he was not crated.
We are with him all the time, he even goes to the office with his dad but sometimes one of us is alone with him at home and HAS to look away for e.g get something from the kitchen where we can't let him go because he eats anything that falls on the floor and we are worried that it is not good for him.
I don't know what to make of it because
1) he obviously has times when he holds it for upto 6 hours without problems
2) he is Ok'ed by vet so no UTI's and it is not DIarrehea
3) there is no apparent substarte preference because he is being trained on paper but will also pee on carpet, tile and his own bedding
He sleeps fine in the crate as long as he can see us, when we put him in there to take a shower etc he whines the whole time.
Please advise us, we are doing everything we can to help him but we don't understand how he can be backtracking in potty training so fast!
Many thanks

I have an 11 week old female black pug. We've only had her for about a week.
She is adjusting really well, but the housetraining is tough. She does really well if I take her outside. I think she associates going outside with going to the bathroom because as soon as I take her out she goes pee and sometimes poop right after we get out there. But she is still having poop and pee accidents inside. I feel like I take her out a lot, like every 1-1 1/2 hours. And when she goes I give her a treat and really praise her. How can I get her to go to the door? I just started putting her on a leash, and taking her out the door, but is there any other ways? She is still pretty small (only 4 1/2 pounds, she was the smallest in her i) but she goes all night without peeing or pooping in her crate, so I know she is capable of holding it. If anyone has any tips, I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Denise
It's not like she is holding it overnight on purpose or anything and then not during the day on purpose. So tiny, she really doesn't have the control. The need to empty her bladder or bowels will be triggered by what she is eating/drinking, when she is having it and movement and activity.
If you stick very closely to her feeding schedule and watch to see how long after meals she needs to wee/poop, then you will soon find yourself taking her outside at the right times and not missing too many times.
Sounds like she is picking up the idea ok, so you are doing well so far!
I have adopted a 2 year old pug who has not been trained at.all. She is my first "older" dog. I have always taken dogs in that are puppies so this is new to me. She learned bad behaviors and now I need to teach her good ones.
My problem is that she does not go! She can go hours and hours and hours without peeing. I stand outside with her for 20-30 minutes and she might go but most times she won't. What can I do???
She goes poop once in awhile in the house but so far I have only found pee once. I just can't figure her out. She is stubborn - that is for sure!
I will try this method. Wally will circle the rug by the door, I put on his halter and take him out. Sometimes it works and other times (no matter how long I wait) he comes in an does all his business on the rug by the door. We have always had cats, so this is a big adjustment.
sounds like he prefers peeing on whatever the rug is made of, could you use that to your advantage? Or you could try paper training him first then shift the paper outside, this worked for Oliver
I just got 2 puglets on Saturday. They are Bruce (black male) and Bella (fawn female). They had a vet check and vaccinations today. The vet said they looked perfect, other than stenotic nares... but that doesn't seem to be posing much of an issue for the moment. They are 15 weeks old today.
Bruce is larger at 10.7 lbs and Bella is 7.4 lbs.
Now that you know a bit of their background. How do I house train two 15 week old pugs? ;-) They lived with their mom, dad and uncle. They were handled from birth.. and have been around kids since birth. The people who had them before didnt work on any kind of house training. Though, she said both of them preferred to go on the plastic mat inside their pen.
I am basically following the crate training guideline. We are doing basically an hour in... and an hour out and they go outside immediately after they get out of the crate. Bella has been doing pretty good. She pees or poops within 5 mins of being outside. She, of course, has had a few accidents. She had diarrhea today (prior to the vet visit) and she even managed to alert us and get outside. Bruce on the other hand... well he likes to pee in the room with carpet. He isn't allowed in the carpeted room for now. You can spend an hour outside with him and he will sniff sniff sniff... and then you come inside... and he goes when you turn your back. Stubborn guy.
