I woke up Christmas morning to find my pug and friend of 10 years had left this world peacefully in his sleep sometime during the night. For the last 2 weeks I had made at least 10 trips to two different vets trying to get some answers to no avail. He started to walk around very off balance about two weeks ago, followed by getting stuck in corners, walking in circles and panting and not sleeping. The vet told me it was a ear infections and vestubular disease and would clear up. After putting him on several ear cleaners and calvamox things started to get somewhat better. He no longer walked in circles and stoped panting all the time. He was still off balance and would still get stuck. They gave me a sedative amitriptyline so he could sleep but it didnt seem to help. I took him to a different vet and they said his ears looked good and though it may be cogonitive dysfunction, they gave me a script for selegiline and also a different sedative acepromazine. I was told to stop the other sedative and finish the clavamox. The first night with the acepromazine he fell asleep within 20 mins, slept almost the whole night only waking up to get a drink and eat I did have to get him upstuck from the corner but he went right back to sleep. When he woke in the morning it was like nothing was wrong with him, he wasnt even off balance! After a few hours he went back to being off balance and getting stuck. I gave him a bath in the afternoon, took him for a walk and sat outside with him watching the sun go down. I brough him inside to eat but he wasnt interested and was more off balance then unusual. I gave him a pill of acepromazine and he fell right asleep (the vet told me I could give him 1/2 tablet twice daily but this was only the 2nd in 2 days). I went out for Christmas eve knowing he would sleep for several hours, came home to find him still sleeping in his bed, he lifted his head to see that I had come home and went back to sleep. I found him the next morning to find he had passed during the night. I'm sorry for the long drawn out post, but I find myself searching for answers of how he could go from 100% to not here in 2 weeks. Has anyone has similar symptons with there pug? Could it have been the acepromazine? PDE? Brain tumor?

I'm so very sorry for your loss!!!!!
Unless you do an autopsy, you'll never know!!!
Do know that you did everything you could for him.....and that there's a part of him always in your heart!
I'm so very sorry. At least you know he went peacefully at home.
Sometimes a severe case of vestibular disease can eat through the bone and cause meningitis or encephalitis. It also could have been a rapidly progressing brain tumor, or even a stroke. It is hard to know for sure without an autopsy.
Again, I am so very sorry....I know how much these little dogs become a part of your heart.
Take care,
Lisa

Allow me to express my condolences with everyone else. I would agree that if you can do the necropsy, that would give you the answers you seek. If you do choose to have one done, please keep us all posted. Thoughts and prayers are with you.

I'm very sorry for your loss. Ten years of love and companionship is a blessing. If you really feel that knowing how he died will help your mourning , then by all means, arrange for it.
I'm so sorry for your loss!
the only thing I can say with much certainty is that he didn't suffer from PDE. PDE strikes young dogs, so the fact that he was 10 years old would rule that out. I had an autopsey done on Junior to find out what took him, and it gave me peace of mind to know that it wasn't anything that could have been prevented, or anything that I could have done differently to change the outcome. My heart breaks for you......
