    Default B-match

I finally have more than 5 minutes to tell you how the B match went. Yakima kennel club asked me to judge the toy group at the sanctioned B-match on Sat after best in show. I drove up that afternoon to do it. Well I was thinking that there wouldn't be many there, it was hot. As it turned out the breeds I judged were Cavaliers, Italian greyhounds, Havanese, Toy fox terriers, papillon and silky terriers. My group was way bigger than the others, many more entries. So I am waiting to start and up comes a judge who I admire very much. He and his partner have a puppy in there. Oh sure no pressure there, with him watching my entire judging. My favorite handler also showed up holding a puppy too. Geez, now I am feeling a tiny bit nervous... As it turned out the judges puppy, didn't have her ears up yet, and her competition was a darling little male owned and shown by a very well know and respected breeder/ handler of cockers. I went over them well, but the bitch puppy just moved better and more correctly, so I put her up over the male. That handler says "Hey, no fair her ears aren't even up! I informed him that for 2 solid days, I boned up on my toy standards, and it is only a DQ, if they are not up by 6 months. She was 5 months. He went back and forth in a teasing matter, arguing with the judge who's puppy won. It was very entertaining. Judge told me I could have gone with either one, and I would have been ok. So it actually went well, and I throughly enjoyed myself going over many really cute little puppies. When it came to best puppy, I went down the line trying to beat this absolutely beautiful 9 month old silky. In the end I put him up for best puppy, and when I left the ring, the judge who I truly respect told me I couldn't have done a better job. I told him thank you, and that he certainly did NOT cause me undue stress watching my every move. ha! He laughed. I watched best in match, and that little Silky won best puppy in match. All and all, I loved it.

I thought I responded to this! Maybe I didn't hit the submit button!!!

You should feel really good that someone you really respect a lot complimented you on the way you judged!!

I'm glad that you enjoyed it too!

LOL - that would be Jerry Moon... Used to be handler for my mentor and he's a really nice guy. Not as tall as he used to be though ... You should've seen him handling Toy Poodles.. Hilarious!! He showed a son of one of my stud dogs to his title and, as tall as he is, had to run to keep up... That boy could move... What was he showing?

I LOVE judging! I have judged a lot of matches, and had the honor of judging sweeps in Vancouver, at their Dal specialty, back in the early 90s, and also at the Houston Dal Specialty, one year at Astrohall. I think it's a lot of fun, but I don't know that I would like to be an AKC judge. To me, that would be a bit too intimidating.

Oh, it was priceless, he had the smallest toy fox terrier there. Tiny, but on the down and back that little dog would leap to his hip. lol He is a really nice guy, and can take a lot of flack.

How neat, I LOVE judging. And find it intimidating too, a bit. But I have set a goal for myself to become a judge, and I am slowly working towards it. One thing I have decided I will not ever make a political choice, once you start that there is no going back. You do a favor for one friend, and why not all the others? So don't ever do that, and at least if they don't agree with what I put up, they will at least know I truly put up what I thought was the best.
