Smile Adopted A Pregnant Pug!?!?

Hi there, I adopted a sweet 1 year old pug 2 weeks ago. The family has 3 kids under 4 and I adopted Kiwi the day before the family had baby #4! They definitely had their hands full! Anyway, Kiwi is such a love, but I have only had male dogs before. My mother said, "I've seen a lot of female dogs and either she has had a litter or she is pregnant!" I took her to the vet and they said they think she might be (enlarged nipples /tum) but it's still a little too early. Sooooooo...I guess we just wait and see! She still has a ton of energy so who knows. Anyway, I'm sure I'll be hanging out here A LOT!

Wow, you'll find that PugVillage will be a huge support. Of course I hope you will spay her as soon as possible after the birth. We love pug puppies, but so many pugs need homes and are in rescue, it can break your heart to see them.
Wishing you the Best of Luck!

Welcome to the Village!

Bless you for opening your home and your heart to this little girl!!!!!

You will have your hands full with her whelping and then the pups!!!!

Go to the PDCA site and see if there are any breeders in your area that might be willing mentor you through this!!!!

Pug Dog Club of America

Also read as much as you can about whelping.

Pug moms do NOTHING on their own...so it's all hands on..You cut the cord...You break them out of the sac! Many pug moms have C sections.......since you don't know the breed that got her.....You should do xrays to see if she can even have the babies on her own.

Also plan to have someone with her 24/7 when you think she's about due...and then afterward for at least the first week. I usually am up until a friend comes for a few hours to give me nap time! Mom can lay on babies....etc!!!!

If you're not comfortable having to deal with pug pups, and the c-section that will likely have to happen you can inquire to the vet about a spay-abort. If they're not far enough along to detect then she could still have the procedure done extremely safely. She's but a baby herself and it might actually be better for her if she didn't have to carry a litter to term.

I know alot of people are uncomfortable about aborts but it's nothing like human aborts. The babies just go to sleep and never wake up when mum is put under for the surgery especially at this stage if she is pregnant. With the state of pug (and all breed) rescue at this point and time, it's an unfortunate option that should be considered.

good luck....sounds like you got her away from an irresponsible family who isn't aware of a thing called birth control.....for humans or pets.....
please get her the vet care that she needs.
