    Default New To Pug Village

    Hi,
We welcomed fawn male, Chavi, a week ago. He will be 11 weeks old tomorrow. He is much more into constantly chewing and nipping than I remember my last pug puppy doing. That pup was a female. Does that make a difference?
    Thanks!

:-) I think it depends on the individual pup and breeding also enters into it.....not the sex.

    Welcome to the Village!!!!

    Hello and
Most Pug puppies enjoy chewing and nipping...but it does vary from Puglet to Puglet, male or female, as to how much...just give him plenty of good chews, and discourage nipping the best you can.
This too shall pass along with his puppyhood...just enjoy him!

Hi & I agree that it depends on the puppy, & maybe has something to do with how young they are when they are separated from their mom & litter....Pug Rugby is a little girl, but when she was a pup, she was very bitey, & that is how I first found a Pug chat forum! We got her at 7 weeks old, & I've heard they learn a lot about bite inhibition if they are left with their littermates & mom a little longer. Bitey little thing! Then, we got a female Lab puppy at 6 weeks! Bitey BIG thing! I hope I have learned my lesson now!

Welcome to the Village! Sounds like normal pug behavior. Substitute bully sticks or other good chews, as folks above were saying, and if he nips hard, cry out in exaggerated pain, put him down, then ignore him entirely for 10 minutes. Don't scold, yell, hit or bite him back, because that's cruel and ineffective, especially for the very sensitive pug. It takes a while, sometimes, but they DO outgrow it. Also, don't give him an old sneaker for a chew toy, because he won't be able to distinguish that from your new Jimmy Choos. Post a pic of Chavi when you can!
